75,304 Roughly 44,000 have been checked in since opening of firearm. Don't know how many of those are bow kills. In the Saturday through Wednesday period last year, about 39,000 gun kills were checked in. If all other numbers stay about the same as last year, we should see an additional 42,000 deer killed. So my projection is 117,500, a 2% decline. Of course I could be wrong

91000+ today
in the last 6 days of gun season last year around 16,000 deer were killed.
In Muzzleloader almost 11,000.
Late antlerless was 4,000.
Archery, let's say 8,000 for the rest of the season.
91,000 + 16,000 + 11,000 + 4,000 + 8,000 = 130,000.
Could be a banner year.

I am calling it a successful season, now onto trapping! I haven't taken a deer yet this year but my sightings are up this year as well...

94,954 at 8:30. That's roughly 1,300 since 1:15 yesterday. Last year 1,452 were checked in the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Jeff, here's Taylor's new video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-ORhEE9VVg Happy Thanksgiving! 95,921 at 12:41.

I'd guess there's some interesting number crunching that could take place with all of the data...

Yes I'm planning a diabolical assault next year during deer season once I analyze all the data! Seriously, I use Kentucky telecheck data frequently when planning hunts on WMAs. At least you can see harvest numbers from prior years and get some ideas on harvest and population trends. Not sure what detail we get with the Hoosier version, but it looks like you can only see your own game or the total.

105,807 Roughly 75,000 were checked in during gun season. That number was about 69,000 last year. I know that I killed 2 fewer deer so the rest of you must be picking up my slack There's still some season left though.

Unless late archery, muzzleloader and that late antlerless season are insanely successful it does not look like the 2015 deer harvest will match or beat 2014. As I have suspected all year, the 2015 deer harvest will most likely be lower than 2014. I only hope the DNR listens and drops bonus county tags and/or eliminates that late firearms antlerless season that we don't need. We are @ 106,000 right now. Last season the muzzleloader harvest was 11,000 and the late antlerless season accounted for 4,000 more. 106,000 + 11,000 + 4,000 = 121,000. Add in the late archery harvest and I would estimate the total ending up somewhere around 125,000 deer. Not a whole lot higher than last season, but a bit. Of course that is just an estimate and the total could obviously be higher or lower. As far as the late antlerless season goes for next year, I would imagine that depends upon how each county fared this year.

So in your opinion, is this a good thing or a bad thing? I took 2 years off hunting, so I'm not caught up.

If you mean the online checkin, then yes, of course it is a good thing. The adjustment period was tough for some I am sure but it is the only rational choice today. The related real-time count is a cool thing but I sure wish we had something more like KY's system: https://app.fw.ky.gov/telecheckreview/ Talk about accountability Although it doesn't appear to give a realtime total anywhere like IN does. 106,945 right now.

Let me make a comment here and it has NOTHING to do about any agenda...................
As you watch the "real time" numbers realize the deer shot are what is in front of a legal license holder when he decides to shoot.............
This has NOTHING to do do with herd health or population. Could it be the "only" deer seen and the "licensed" hunter decided he did not want to go home with an open tag?
People can "blow smoke" on how many deer were killed this year, but what is the age of the deer killed?
If you believe that we have an increasing population......... I have some land in the desert I can sell......
Without a REAL census of deer the only number that can be used is what people killed. that is what Indiana uses today.
Investigate the facts people! Ask how a TRUE census is done..........
When science meets tradition there will be sparks.....

Joe, I think most everybody who looks at this rationally understands that. Our kill numbers are just a survey really. But it's a pretty decent sample size and the best data we have. Unfortunately DNR just doesn't have either the will or maybe the resources to do more. And honestly, I don't think they need to. Everywhere I hunt, there are still plenty of deer. I hunted Monroe, Parke, Jackson and Washington Counties this year and saw about the same number of deer. The two deer I butchered were big and healthy. Most does had twins. Seems the guys who kill big deer every year are still killing big deer and there's lots of folks getting lucky in the big deer category too. I'm not worried about our deer herd. Almost 107,000 right now

The harvest total is just a number. The breakdown of that harvest total will tell the tale....good or bad. Particular attention should be paid to the antlered deer and fawn percentages.
...and no, I won't venture to guess. Based on what I've been hearing for three years now, the harvest numbers should be sliding significantly. But it seems somebody is picking up the slack somewhere.

I like most of Kentucky's deer count page, although "All Counties" is missing and could easily be integrated. They are not far off - from a website perspective (my job), a few auto-generated graphs for buck/doe percentages as well can be programmed in a couple hours. Hopefully they will continue to upgrade.
It would be great if Indiana made those raw statistics available for people like me so we could run those numbers and graphs to create useful info quicker than the DNR

I hunt a place in Tippecanoe county which got hit bad with EHD a while back, chose not to hunt it that year at all. Would be good to see real time data of how much this county harvest went down to confirm what I saw on the ground. Funny that KY leads the way on this, maybe in 5-10 years we will be where KY DNR is today =) Why not have county/region specific deer quotas and track this this online? We do this now with our river otter season (I know I checked one in yesterday) They do this with big game in the western states so we know it can be done and has worked for years in places like Colorado. Once again IN trails the pack in game management. Originally posted by BREW...: Originally posted by Stinger: I like most of Kentucky's deer count page, although "All Counties" is missing and could easily be integrated. It would be great if Indiana made those raw statistics available for people like me so we could run those numbers and graphs to create useful info quicker than the DNR So if you had all the info you wanted real time how would that affect your or anyone else's hunting decisions? ...No hunting? Please explain ....

Another way it helps to have details is on public land. Kentucky WMA lists alphabetical and show current and past season harvest numbers including for deer antlered/antlerless and turkey as hen, jake or tom and also by weapon. I can see how many have been taken and see how productive the place has been for deer or turkey. It may lead you to or away from certain wmas and helps get an idea of what to expect. With this knowledge shared, you can do some cyberscouting before you hit the ground. Like 76 said, if you also know they were impacted by disease or a poor hatch, it's just one more nice to have modern convenience.

fur trappers knew this would happen, fur market has collapsed and coyotes are basically worthless and the coyote live market is shut down in IN. Very little financial incentive to pursue these invasive deer killing vermin.... Originally posted by refuge hunter: ...Tired of seeing as many yotes as deer.

Quitters If it were easy, everybody would be doing it. It definitely gets tougher this time of year. Especially with this warm weather. Browse is everywhere. I mean I still have leaf lettuce coming up in my garden! Stupid El Nino! I'll still be hunting through the end though. I'll try and gut shoot a few yotes down in Monroe County too.

It is funny how deer numbers in certain pockets vary. Many are reporting numbers of deer sightings being down this year. Personally, my deer sightings have gone way up this year. Which is odd because for the last 4 or 5 years they have dropped steadily to the point where it was hard to even get motivated to go hunt. But this year it has been crazy on both of my main properties. What has been missing is mature bucks this year. Heck even seeing a 2 1/2 year old would be nice at this point. This year it seems like 1 1/2 year old bucks are literally hiding behind every tree. Plenty of does also this year. But then I talk to other guys even in the same county and they are not seeing squat for deer. Been kind of odd for sure.
I just like seeing the real time harvest numbers. The next step would be for the state to be able to break the numbers down in real time even better. With the technology I would think that it wouldn't take too much to see county data and even antlerless vs buck data in real time.
Still time to get out there this year though. Cold fronts are moving in and it could get pretty good in the next few days.

The two places I hunted this year (Fulton & Franklin County) my deer sightings were way up this year... Been a few years since I have seen that many deer... But other than the Doe I took there was only one other one I would have taken and she was bigger than the one I got... Lotta dinks running around but that means in a couple two or three years there should be lots to chose from if they don't get taken or die by other means...

So road kills now add to total?
I have watched this thread on several sites, it is like a competition on "Can we beat last years total?".
Enjoy the deer numbers........ dead and alive!

Enjoy the deer numbers........ dead and alive! Adds to the meat in my freezer. Wasn't by choice. Wasn't gonna be wasted either! Some of us just enjoy watching how the harvest unfolds. I'd think a bean counter would find it interesting. Bad year?

like I said earlier, overall kill is one thing, its the buck kill and age break down that is important...

Many states, including Indiana, use the antlered deer harvest total as a population indicator. (i.e. a declining antlered harvest indicates a declining deer herd.)
The adult female/fawn ratio is typically in the 3:2 range (60%-65%/35%-40%). I've been told you don't want the fawn kill to rise much above that ratio...as that would indicate the damage has already been done.
If you consistently pull water out of a well faster than the well can replenish, over time, the well will eventually go dry. If you are not monitoring water levels in the well, you won't find out there is a problem until it is too late.
We've never been able to accurately measure the "water level" of our deer herd. Indicators are what we are left with....
There are none so blind as those who will not see.

not much of an increase...if it wasnt for the dam "kill all the does" late gun season, there wouldnt be crap of an increase....if the buck kill is down, and the increase is all in the antlerless kill, next year will suck....so, dont put on those frilly panties yet.... lets wait to see where the kill spreads out....

I added one more doe to the total. Smoked one at 193 yards off shooting sticks last night. Longest shot ever on a deer for me. 357 max loaded with Barnes 180 gr ttsx. Ranged and witnessed. Double lung, no run. DRT. Been a great season, hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did.

If it wasnt for the "kill all the does" late gun season, the kill would be well under 119,000, it took the DNR to institute this extra season and to increase the bag limits in the reduction zones to keep the kill numbers up... so, once again all that is happening it a further reduction of a diminishing herd.....

Isn't it the same as last year? Only with fewer counties qualifying this year?

😇 Yes this is true. Not the same in "reduction zones"....the bag limits increased...with guns added (where allowed) after start of gun season!!! But in all reality I DON"T believe the DNR is stock piling deer to allow killing as needed!!! I also don't live in the Land of "IF"....
