This morning I had a great hunt. It was my fourth sit of the year and my first one with any deer sightings. I bumped a deer right before getting to my tree to climb. It wasn't in a hurry and walked around for a while. I finally get up in my tree after quite a bit of work trimming limbs as I climbed up. Made enough noise I thought for sure my day was done. I was sitting near a winter wheat field where two logging roads intersect. About an hour after I was all ready I hear deer behind me and can see three does making their way through the woods. I just watch as they follow a trail through the woods knowing I won't get a shot at them. Well they do 3/4 of a circle around me and end up to my front. I draw back and the lead doe needs to take about two more steps and I will have a fifteen yard shot. Well she stops and starts sniffing the air and the wind is blowing right to her. She doesn't like what she smells and starts backtracking. I try to shift to my right a little (I'm still drawn back) and my arm hits my safety strap and I pulled the release and the arrow goes flying through the trees. Deer run but aren't too spooked. They stop and still mill around for a bit before walking off. I then hear something to my right. I look just in time to see legs moving through the woods. I watch her and she is following the script exactly. She comes to the intersection of the logging roads and turns straight towards me. I'm already drawn back at this time. For some reason she turns a little to look out in the winter wheat field and it's just enough for me to get a shot. I let the arrow fly and it hits her right through the shoulder. It hit offside shoulder so there was no pass through. She mule kicked so hard she did a complete front flip before bolting through the woods. I heard her crash seconds later. I got down over an hour later and looked for blood. With no exit hole there was very little blood to be found so I just went to look where I heard her crash. I turned a corner of a mowed trail and she was laying right in the middle of it. So glad I was able to find her and put some meat in the freezer. Nine hours later and she is all cut up and hunting clothes are being washed for another go at it tomorrow.
