Wow. It is really surprising to me how little that buck moved throughout most of the year. Thanks for posting. The rest of the website is equally informative.

By far the best study I have ever seen on the life of a whitetail deer. Thanks for sharing this.

This was actually pretty cool! Seems he went to that distant spot when he felt threatened. Very interesting.

Great posting! I see so many stories talking about deer being creatures of habit, this certainly illustrates that during the rut (for bucks at least) habit goes out the window, and probably goes any which way the wind blows him an enticing scent.

I just read about 15 blogs by the Penn State researchers. I am so impressed with their findings, their blog posts, their commitment... its really great.

Start from the beginning and take a gander at those movement images. Nothing short of Outstanding.

Thanks for posting Hunter Dan that is fascinating. If you have not clicked on this link do yourself a favor and take 15 minutes. It is timely with our rut about to pop. Topo maps are enjoyable research for me and these time lapse videos were very enlightening. Some of the best buck movement research I have seen.

That is pretty cool. What I really found fascinating was that around the end of the third week of September and until the 4th week of October, his range really shrunk as he waited for the rut. I find that fascinating because I have noticed over the years that my trail cams show similar that all of the bucks I had been seeing usually fall off the planet at around September 20th or so and don't start showing back up until the last few days of October. Historically since I got my first trial cam back in 2004, I have noticed this. This study really re-enforces this thought. I also found it interesting how this buck basically glued his feet in one spot for the rifle season.

Fascinating stuff!

I see the sam thing on one farm I hunt!

Still trying to find where they disapear to. One bedding area is right off a state highway, about an acre in size and I saw 2 giant bucks come out of it last November. They hide in some out of the way spots!

While this is very interesting, it would seem the terrain differences may make a difference if one was to compare a farmland buck vs a area in Pa. with a more rugged terrain. I would tend to think that terrain is similar to many areas of southern Indiana and not north of Indy... farm lands have broken woodlots spaced out quit a bit and once the crops come down, I would think travel patterns are wider..... I would like to see comparisons ....
