A few years ago I was forbidden to take a really nice rack found dead after gun season. Unless it has changed, you are not allowed to possess a head unless you have a permit from a CO.

I guess a law was passed because of poachers. That may have changed since then. Reason I am bringing it up is because I would hare to see someone get a citation if it is still a law.

Any Law Enforcement Officer can issue a permit to posses a roadkill deer. Not sure about the "found ones"

I would call my local CO if in this situation and tell him what happened and I would like to keep the rack, if they can let you under IN law, I bet they would. Honesty is the best policy...

Brother-in-law found a bucks head in the middle of the woods, tied up in a tree with speaker wire a few years back after season. Being it was more than likely poached he called CO, CO came out to investigate and let him keep it, my guess is it is up to their discretion on a case by case basis.

Figured whoever did it, didnt want to be caught with a fresh deer head and was going to come back in spring to get it but didn't want any coyotes to take off with it or mice to chew it up
