Really we gave them a taste test(with just our tounges) and was sweet tasting so we figured they would eat them and we noticed none on the ground and not very many on the trees but I don't know that much about them do they produce a lot of the fruit or just a couple per tree?

depends. I shake the tree and catch what falls out. If they are on the ground, they likely are past their (very short) prime ripeness.

I used to mow an older ladies yard in town where I grew up and that yard was loaded with papaws. One bank would get so slick with the Indiana bananas that I slipped and fell many times. Excellent eating for humans and deer.

coons and possums eat the majority. should be a fair amount of fruit per tree

I picked a few this year. Our woods is loaded pawpaw trees and I only found a few that had any fruit

Huntin is not a matter of life and death, its more important than that

I have eaten a few, but won't do it again. In 2008 or 2009 the trees at my family farm were loaded. A friend and I picked several. They did not taste normal, so after 2 bites I quit eating. I had a lava lamp exploding out of my back side at least 15 times the next 2 days. My friend who ate 2 or 3 entire paw paws nearly ended out in the hospital. I'm not sure what was wrong with them but neither of us will eat them anymore. As a joke I have taken several to his house and left them on the kitchen table.
