Guys, just starting out this year with a bow. Have about 1,000 acres to hunt. Little woods, lots of thick tree lines bordering corn fields (most of the property) and a nice ditch the deer like to run along. Sandwiched between a River and a woods preserve they run back and forth between. I have not bought any kind of stand yet. I was thinking about getting a ground blind instead of a tree stand to start with. I wanted to see what everyone's thoughts were on bow hunting out of a ground blind. Pros, cons, etc. Thanks All!

ground blinds work!! Get it in early and brush it in well and you will be fine.

Make sure you can shoot your bow out of it. This usually means a tall, fairly large blind for me with my recurves/longbows. I feel fairly claustrophobic in a pop-up blind but really like ones I make out of materials in the area. 76chevy's point on getting it in early is a good one. Practice shooting while sitting down.

Killing a deer from thee ground at normal bow range is a tough endeavor but certainly a fun one.

76 and John both offered good advice....

The first year I hunted out of pop up blind, I didn't take the time to shoot out of it and it kept me from being able to get a shot off @ a deer....

So my advice would be similar to Johns.....

Practice shooting with your bow out of the blind you are going to use while wearing the clothes you plan on wearing.....

Trust me....it's worth doing.....

If you have access to some old or even slightly bent up cattle panels- make your own. Plenty tall enough and will last much longer than a bought pop-up. Only downfall is they are harder to move. Cheaper and more durable than a mid-upper range blind.

I actually like this idea. I could probably even make one with some fencing from TSC or some place like that. That way I could use the trees and corn to make one like you have shown.

Good advice above. The only thing I would add is to pay attention to your seat height. You need to be sitting high enough to shoot comfortably out of the blind windows and not risk the bottom limb of your bow making contact with the ground during the shot.

Most bows today are pretty short axle to axle, so this may not be an issue for you. I used to hunt with a 41" bow....and definitely had to pay attention to seat height.

There are none so blind as those who will not see.

its a rush when you have three or four at arms reach away from you and they have no clue you are there!

con: limited visibilty when they come in from unexpected directions.

they shine brightest in fowl weather wink

The number one mistake most hunters do when in a blind is to open up all the windows. The deer can see your silhouette move inside the blind & will spook easy. So only open the windows on the side that has the best chance of having a deer pass by & wear black or dark color clothes.
