How about asking something like......
If you aren't happy with present deer numbers in your area, are you willing to give up/change A,B,C or D to hopefully see an increase in those numbers.... [/b]Then why don't you put up that poll.... Instead of pre-judging and picking something apart before we even know what direction DNA is wanting to go with it. Geeeeesh..... Talk about throwing acid on something before you even know it's motive or worth. No wonder you've been confronted on several threads recently for antagonism. What are you afraid of that might be revealed ... Or gain more momentum than it has already??? I bet I know....

I have to admit that I'm surprised by the quick critical comments to a very straightforward question (s). Of course, then followed up by meaningless crass comments.

JB posted this yesterday in the "deer numbers declining" thread... "Your premise that Facebook matters is flawed, questions can be manipulated to get a response the poster wants,example......"Would you like to see more deer where you hunt?" Who as a deer hunter is going to say less? Ask a farmer who depends on his crop if he wants more deer? Or a guy who just totaled his vehicle on a deer. " I felt the same way about the poll...."Who as a deer hunter is going to say they want to see fewer deer?" BTW, my initial response wasn't meant to be critical, but the poll just seemed to be geared towards receiving a certain answer. If I offended the op (DNA) I certainly offer my apologies.

While the question may logically have a supposed predictable answer, a straight forward question is not necessarily geared towards a specific response.

So what is all your opinions on the poll? Are you seeing deer in smaller quantities where you hunt? Do you want to see more, and for what reason? Has there been a drastic change that you see can be managed differently for a different outcome? Maybe letting the poll stimulate conversation, we may find some solutions. Just saying.
I know I am not seeing 10-20 percent of the deer I seen just 10 years ago. I think it is due to a perfect storm for the herd. Liberalized bag limits, EHD, Coyote Depredation, Leasing and the mentality of getting one's monies worth. What can we control? EHD and Leasing are here to stay. Deer will develop immunities to it over time, as they have down south, but that it over time. Leasing here to stay, at least until the individuals stop seeing deer. Coyotes we can manage somewhat by hunting them or letting someone else hunt or trap our hunting areas. But the biggy that we can control is trigger control. However, most are not good with that, especially with the perception of an unlimited resource. A perception that just does not exist in nature. DEW and DNA, keep it up, promote discussion. Some of these hecklers will never be able to move beyond that. Those of us watching that care appreciate your efforts. God Bless. Gary

Okay, after the jokes let's lay it out. This poll is asking a question that I am pretty sure EVERY hunter I know would say yes. Now Gary touched on seeing what the reasoning is behind the yes though, which is where the real meat and potatoes hit home. The only known causes of deer shortages that I can think of are the following: -Hunter Harvest (In Season) -EHD/CWD (other illness) -Car collision (both direct or fawns of mothers indirectly) -Depredation Permits -Predators (yotes in IN primarily...and believe it or not coons even when fawns are discovered just born) -Loss of nutritionally rich habitat All of these factors affect the localized deer herds we all hunt...the question is which of the above have affected your local herd...and have they affected it so much so that you desire to see more deer because you don't ever or hardly do?? The survey is an example (no offense meant) of how a question can be presented in a fashion to which many conclusions can be drawn. Say for instance the DNR put out this question to random license holders this Fall...and 99% of them answer yes... ...no conclusion can really be drawn from this other than the obvious fact: Hunters like seeing deer and desire to see more. However, those same results could be used to make statements like "Hunters are not seeing deer, otherwise they would say yes." When in fact someone could see a dozen deer a day, and still if they are a hunter like myself and most of us still say yes they'd like to see more. Who knows what DNA's purpose for the posted poll was, but it may have been a handful of reasons...or he may not have a reason and just wanted to yank some chains haha!

"I know of ZERO hunters that want to see LESS deer when they go hunting...."
8% or 2 people want less deer so ZERO is not accurate. Over the years I have had others tell me they never wanted the deer herd to ever be the size it became. As communicated to me, they had a good place to hunt deer, they never want more hunters coming to the sport in which they had to compete with both for access as well as the type of deer they wanted to shoot. Some hunters and groups have preached that we need to lower the deer herd to have quality.
I would think that the vast majority of hunters would like more deer. I would think hunters like to seer deer and watch them as wild animals. I would also think that the vast majority of deer hunters could agree on most things they prefer about the deer herd and deer hunting and one of those points of agreement would be more deer to hunt. One would assume if that to be true the majority of deer hunters would work to achieve that end. From what I have seen deer hunters are more consumed about where they differ than where they agree. This post tends to validate that.
Unless sportsmen work together others will control their fate. Farm Bureau (the farm lobby, it's not about insurance) though the legislature and their influence in the General Assembly are managing deer. Not the Sportsmen not the public and definitely not the DNR.

I honestly posted the poll to see where hunters were on the idea of more deer. It has seems that nobody was thinking about it over the past few years when the DNR put in the antlerless season and high antlerless numbers. That was the DNR responding to Bill Friend's bill.
