I hunt this farm right by my house and it has a 30 acre thicket right along a creek bottom. Historically, it is a great bowhunting and rut area. I have been putting a food plot in there for the past 6-7 years. The only issue is there is NO WAY to get any big equipment back there. I use my trusty 20 year old Murray push mower.

My wife saw me loading it and asked what I was doing and how far I needed to pull it to the mowing area? When I told her I was mowing a food plot down and it is 1/2 mile along a corn field she thought I was nuts. Maybe I am but come Fall the sweat equity will be worth it.

Now what to plant?????

How are your plots coming?

I like it....you do what you gotta do!

Soybeans would be a good option for this time of year.

We had 3 nice big soybean plots coming up (8 bags worth of seed), had sprayed with glypho twice, and were looking good. Then the Wabash River went berserk, and now they're under 8 feet of water. Will try to replant if the river ever recedes and it all dries out.

We planted two acres of soybeans on 6/13 and they are doing great.

Last weekend, sprayed the clover and alfalfa for the 2nd time with Clethodim (grass killer). Also, mowed down the winter rye plots and the turkeys were in them before we finished.

Will go over the clover and alfalfa plots one more time with Butyrac (broadleaf weed killer**) this weekend and those should be good to go for summer.

After that, we should be done with food plots until mid-August.

**Most broadleaf weeds can be controlled by mowing, but there are broadleaf weeds that vine at ground level and never get tall enough to mow. They will flat destroy a clover plot.

I'm doing half acre of logging roads w the same equipment, self propelled and a weedeater. I planted clover last fall and it is looking great with all the rain. Takes awhile but no one will be laughing this fall.

Bean, I know your wife. I think it is you that just doesn't get it! Hope all is well. I have had really good luck with Imperial Whitetail Clover. Looks like a good place for it. Maybe put some purple top turnips the whole length about 10 ft wide? probably need to get them both in before Aug 1st. Got mine in a little late last year. Spray in the spring with Arrest weed killer. Good luck (and listen to your wife!)....Max
