I've never had much luck with shed hunting. Is there anyone that could share some wisdom as to when the best time to start searching and where. I normally check around bedding areas and where deer cross creeks. Then I concentrate on open field edges. Never any luck at all. No idea why I'm missing out on finding them. Where do the bucks hang out in these next few months? confused

You can walk MILES and not find one, you can go out and find a half dozen in an hour....they are like looking for that needle in a haystack....sounds like you have the right idea, I'll walk trails, bedding areas, open grassy fields, area that have pines/evergreens, fence crossings, where they jump over....I'll put in dozens of miles every year, but up here where I'm at there are a LOT of others that look for 'em too...I dont have the time I used to, others I know do, one guys I know has already found a handful, but he has the time......my largest is a 79+ incher 5 pt right side....never did find the left, I went over every inch of that ground for a few hundred acres and went back for 2 weeks looking...who knows where that other side went...

found a match set from a small 8pt on january 2 , 2015. they were 2feet from each other. was not looking. this was on the edge of a foodplot, where he was coming/going into the woods.

my best luck is checking out fields, particularly late season food plots. and then getting back into beds. i'm post season scouting much more than shed hunting, but i've found several sheds looking in likely buck bedding areas, finding the bed, getting down in the bed and scanning around the bed, and actually seeing sheds when i'm kneeling down in the bed scanning the area.

Good to get out and hike, but you may be lowering your chances of finding sheds by doing much tromping around now.

Many deer are still wearing their antlers, and the pressure might just run them out of your area to shed their antlers elsewhere.

I'd recommend giving it another month before you get too serious about shed hunting. had one behind the house last evening wearing both sides still.

Dump some shelled corn and keep it replentished in the same spot for the next 30 days, and you may very well find a shed or two pretty close to the dump area. I've had this happen a couple times.

I've not seen an antlered deer now for a week or so now, probably safe to assume most have shed. Snow melting off this week, will be good time to look.

up to 4, including one set found Sat....a 59" 5pt left side, a 35" baby 4 pt and the set-53"/4pt left & 5pt/49" right with a busted g2....There's a few guys I know that have a dozen or more, one at 74" as a 4 pt !! That would be a huge 8 if the other side was equal.....snow is the big hamper right now...still knee high in the big bean and crp fields and at 8"+ in the wooded areas....this thaw and warmer weather will finally start to melt it some...Ive got a few places to get into I havnt been yet, no place to park 'cause of the high snow

Found several sheds, but this younger buck is still hanging on to both antlers so far.
