Really enjoyed a beautiful day on Saturday hunting with my son. The weather and cold temps reminded me of my childhood gun hunts in southeastern Ohio and the post Turkey day gun season.
So proud to have my 15 year old with me as he's finally graduated to hunting in a stand by himself, albeit only about 75 yards from me so I could keep my eye on him. He passed a doe at 50 yards right at legal light as he wasn't 100% sure of the time and didn't want to move to check his phone. We had heard shots already and I had checked the time, so he would have been good, but he held. The waiting game began and action was slow until 10:30 when this buck crossed in front of him about 80 to 90 yards out. He passed as he wasn't comfortable with the distance and had set a 75 yard limit for himself with the open sight Rem slug gun. It was heading my way and he knew I had twice his range so he held.
I'm happy to have this deer, but feel truly blessed to have the sons I have, and for the one that actually likes sitting in trees like me, and show judgement beyond his years, well, I don't think there's words for it.
He'll be back at it this weekend, his opportunity will come and I'm confident he'll make the most of his chance.
One broken cart tire later, mile and a half out and then back in with a borrowed cart, I had the deer almost out, was completely whooped, and my son show's up and finishes the job for me.
Again, truly blessed!
And HUGE thanks to the nice gentlemen at the camp ground that let me borrow their cart!
