My propane turkey fryer has worked well for me for 20 years.

Don't over complicate it or skank out a good cooking pot. I just found an old 5gal metal bucket, cut it short to about 10" depth and boil over my LP fish fryer burner.

It's a nasty operation; hair, brains, etc. No way I would use a pot I intended to eat out of.

But, the brain chunks in the bottom of the pot just adds to the fish flavor!!!! :p I just use a galvanized feel pail. Not my good cooking pot! laugh

how much do you spend on the propane to cook one on a turkey cooker though?

You'll trap before the animals get prime, and reach their top dollar value (which is fine with me) because "its just about the memories, and $$ is a bonus". But yet you are worried about a couple dollars of propane vs. electric??? Wait a couple weeks on the trapping and maybe you can afford the propane with the extra money!!! laugh

I just set an old canning pot on top of the wood burner in the barn and put a few logs in every couple hours. Works pretty good for me!

$12.99 target single burner, $15 galvanized feed pan from tractor supply and some old barn wood. Can of oxyclean for water is what I have used for years.

When I checked last propane refills were pretty high, about $25 for a 50lb cylinder. I have all the stuff to make a homemade boiler already.

I use this applied with a cheap 1" wide brush. You need to get thee brain and eyes out before boiling. They are very waxy and will penetrate the bone. Its harder to bleach out to a super ghost white. The oxyclean in the water will get the skull pretty darn white also. It helps break down the meat for easy removal as well.

Can you explain a "can" of oxyclean? How much you use for the amount of water you used?

I boil mine in red potatoes, carrots, and green beans! Mmmmmmm laugh

I like using TSP. Its seems to break the meat down, and degrease the bone well. Then the Basic White, and 40 volume Peroxide. I will have to try the Oxyclean!

Have had to stain a few that soiled in dirt. I use a airbrush for that. Here's how I cut to get the brain out. 3/4" slot and I make a insert to go in. Jig saw or ultrasonic tool is best. I can secure to plaque by screwing into wood. I just use hot glue to lock into position.

Oxyclean is about a pint can for like $6, I'll add half into the couple gallons of water it takes. Simmer skull outside though. Hope this helps.

If you loose any color on the rack at the burr two stains work good. Golden oak as a base then dark walnut in around the burr 8oz minwax will last for a long time. Artist paint brush from the craft section at Walmart is all you need to bring it back to a nice tone.

Guess oxyclean would be a tub not can.
