This past year, in passing, he mentioned he would like to go hunting with me. During this time I was working on a foodplot and thinking of spots for a ground blind that I could one day take my son Thomas. So then this foodplot got me excited enough that I went out and bought a handi 357 with AR collapsible stock. I topped it with a red dot. Jackson shot it and was dead on up to 50 yards. The Hunt: We got to camp Friday night. Did the pre hunt coaching with ideas of where the deer would come from. Woke up Saturday morning. Got set at 6.30. I could hear acorns falling that he thought were deer, which got him all jacked up. I enjoyed this , not telling him they were just acorns falling. 7ish came and we could see the plot. Then about 7 .30 I said it feels Deery let's get the gun up on the sticks. I hand him the gun grab the stick and a doe was at 15 yards, of course from the wrong direction. I told him to get up and **** the hammer and get ready to shoot. He asked why. I told him there was a deer. He thought I was kidding but then the deer jumped to 18 yards right in front of us. His face was priceless. I asked if he was on her and he said yes. I said shoot. It was a perfect shot and she ran 70 yards expiring at the end of the field. After the shot: I taught him to track even though we saw her go down. We were very excited. I put a touch of blood on his cheek for his first kill. I think I could of talked him into drinking its blood and eating its liver if pressed, but my cousin might have killed me for that one. Since I had him the whole weekend I took him to the reds game then home Sunday. The neat thing was that he asked if he could come again next year and wanted to know if my son Thomas could sit with us. I feel a new tradition has begun!
