I stopped at the new Avon Gander Mountain tonight to buy some of those new fangled Wichester Long Beard XR's and I asked one of the clerks at the gun counter where I might find the turkey loads. "They're right behind you" he said pointing at the the rack full of pheasant shells. I thanked him and went off and found them on the other side of the store with the turkey stuff. So I go to the check-out (only one very flustered clerk but only one guy ahead of me). I watched as he tried to ring up 2 ammo cans and 3 boxes of shells. By the time he figured it out the line behind me had grown considerably and the kid got even more flustered. He swiped a box of 9 mm 3 times when the guy pointed out the boxes were similar but different calibers (.45, .40 S&W, and 9 mm). The kid couldn't understand the prices were different. When I finally got out of there it was such a relief. While it's very close to my house I don't think I'll be doing a lot of business there. Jack P.S. Dicks bought Galyan's about 15 years ago. I also miss the downtown Em-Roe and the old German gunsmith they had. He was the best around.

Dicks bought Galyans out in 04 so it will be 10 years in June... I haven't been in Dicks for years now nor do I plan on anytime soon.... Their selection sucked the last time I was there...

It says established each year - consult county clerk. county clerks did a lot of wildlife stuff back then. you collected the bounty on fox ears from them too. h.h.

Yep..that's what it states on the tag. We used to take crows to the clerks in Marshall County, and get 50 cents per crow. Not a bad gig for a kid back then. I actually found my Dad's license in the butt stock of an old Nitro King 12ga. that he had. Seems that "back in the day" they would keep their license in the recessed area under the butt- plate of the gun, thus allowing them to keep their current licenses with them at all times. Two screws held the butt-plate on. One was normally a "phillips-head" screw,,and the other "slotted" head screw,,,large enough for a dime to be used to remove. I noticed a small blueish paper wedged between the stock and butt-plate, and investigated....otherwise I would have never found it.

Back then,,,I don't think anyone but us kids bothered to shoot crows. I remember bringing a deceased one into the house while my Mom was doing dishes. I squeezed that sucker and he let out a perfect "CAW"....Mom wasn't impressed.
