My son and I are going on an elk hunt this fall and I am looking for a rifle. I need it to be under $500. I doubt I'll rifle hunt much in the future so I don't want to spend more than that.

I was pondering buying a new Remington 700 30-06 from Gander mountain ($479) but I hear the scope isn't too good so I thought I'd look here.

Let me know if you have a scoped rifle that fits the bill.

John, I have a Winchester Model 70 I've only sighted in. It's a no frills black synthetic stock with I believe a 3-9x40 Simmons (not the greatest scope either, but it sighted in fine) Got the box and all the paperwork. PM me if interested. I got it for the same reason only I didn't actually have a hunt planned lol!

sorry, it's a 30/06 as well. I have a box or two of ammo also I believe.

About all you are going to get in that price range will be a low end one such as you mentioned or such as varmint101 is offering.

Get familiar with it and you will be fine.

Do yourself a favor, ESPECIALLY if you have an encore....buy a 358 WSSM barrel from MGM, them you'll have an Indiana deer rifle as well.

I took mine bear hunting and will be taking it again come 8/29.

If that isn't your cup of tea a Ruger American. I have the 243, and love it. I have mine topped with a Nikon. This is a VERY accurate rifle sub quarter size groups at 200 yards.

got a 300 Winchester Short Mag you can borrow if you like, or a 700 Rem in 30-06. both scoped the 300 has a Kahles scope, best of the two.

I also saw midway has the Redfield Revenge scopes on sale for $79 bucks with free shipping, put that on the Ruger American, would be a nice set up.

Thanks to all who have replied. Savage has a $75 rebate on their 11/111 Trophy Hunter XP, Nikon Scope, Accutrigger. Got it at Dick's for $549 and with points and rebates, I'm out the door for under $450. Plus I got another $30 in points for ammo. I'll let you know how it does at the range and hopefully my son will be standing over a bull in October smile

I went to Gander Mtn last night and they didn't seem too interested in a guy trying to keep his spend under $500. I wonder what their average sale is. Bet it's not $500. They were $30 more than Dicks anyway.
