How are your gardens doing this year?

I planted lots of sweet corn and it has taken off. Tomatoes and peppers too. Lots of rain so far this year but fortunately this soil drains well. Blackberries might be a bumper crop this year.

Trapper, yes black raspberries they are, but they are better than blackberries. Very sweet this year and made an awesome cobbler. I also made muffins with them and they turned out really good.

We might have to agree to disagree on that =)

I love both but blackberries are my favorite!

To me blackberries have more flavor. The seeds are bigger though. They're just starting to get ripe here. Should be a banner year, with all this rain.

Too much rain up here, got another 3" yesterday. We've had about 12" of rain in the last two weeks. Most of my garden plants show stress of getting too much water. Its not been the best year for gardening so far. h.h.

Same here HH. my plot has great drainage, but the ground is so saturated my plants can't take it. Scoping the farmers markets pretty close this year so I can at least put up some veggies.

First planting of peas, mustard, and cabbage are finished. Picking cukes, squash, zucchini, some cherry tomatoes and various peppers everyday. Beans are showing signs of too much water. Planted sweet potatoes in containers again this year and they are going crazy.

Pollen is not reaching the female parts of the flower. Peas are self-pollinating...try gently shaking plants during blossom period will aide the distribution of pollen.

Picked first batch of beans today, they got ready quicker than I thought. Got a few grape tomatoes turning red everything else is still green. Already picked a couple heads of cabbage and my flathead Dutch cabbage will be ready soon, they are HUGE...looks like I'll be making some sauerkraut again. First time I've planted the big cabbage and made kraut for a few years. Hoping it turns out. JalapeƱos will be ready before long too...love to make homemade salsa.

Was wondering hows every one's garden is doing ?
Ours has been slow coming on, didn't really start do much till the rain slowed down.
It has been slow going with the canning getting about a dozen quarts of tomatoes at a time and only a dozen pints of salsa.
Finished up with about 30 quarts of corn in the freezer.
Thankful for what we have received so far just would like to have a little more to get through the winter.

I picked 2 5 gallon buckets of tomatoes today for canning. Corn didnt do much due to me not hitting it with high nitrogen fertilizer. Beets and beans did good too. I had lot of cucumbers and cukes. Next year Im not planting much garden. h.h.

HH were getting about a lucky buck bucket of tomatoes about every 4 days, just not doing good. usually our tomatoes do very well. But after the strong storms around July 4th it just messed them up.

Good looking corn there Justin, Ours did very well I just didn't plant as much as last year.

We still have some time left, it will just be slow going. Its starting to get very dry here tho.

We have been done w/ greenbeans for a while. Had a bunch of cucumbers and tomatoes. Wifey made/is making a ton of salsa and pasta sauce. cantaloupe is ready now and watermelon soon.

All in all, our garden was pretty good. Of course with 100,000 honeybees beside the garden, that helped.

Bean I think thats what happened, the very heavy rain 2 to 3 days at a time a couple times a week just kept the pollin from doing its job.
The tomatoes seem to be coming on better, still plenty of time. Picked the last tomatoe last year Nov 3, so if the frost holds off we'll be good

I got 10 quarts of pickles done, 6 quarts of spaghetti sauce and about half a freezer full of whole tomatoes ready to can when I find the time. Still picking plenty a couple times a week for the table.

On round 3 of lettuce, still eating tons of kale and zukes are coming on from a late planting.

I have eaten about a million raspberries and still picking a pint a day.

40 pounds of pears too this year. I freeze them and use for smoothies along with surplus raspberries.

I even have a volunteer pumpkin in the compost pile.

I got about 100 habaneros and twice that many chili peppers. Made some awesome sauce with smoked peppers, tomatoes and carrots.

Got some beans and broccoli in there too. Overall a good year.

Well after long look at the garden I beleive that its to far gone to put any more effort into it.
So I mowed it down, I do have a couple of plant that are good for sandwiches but thats it.
Good Lord willing there will be next year.

My garden was the worst ever due to heavy rains and flooding in Indy. I canned 7 quarts of beans and had to buy Tomato's to get 14 quarts.

Will try again next year......

Now!!! we planted Tomatillo's 2 plants this year and have made the BEST Salsa or Verde salsa for mexican dishes ever. 2 plants have made 10 pints with another 10 pints to make next week.

When science meets tradition there will be sparks.....

Those Tomatillo's do make good salsa, we also bought tomato's wed at the Plainfield farmers market to can. That is a first for me ever, usally I can can grow a pretty good variety and amount of tomato's.
Finally just cut our garden down, going to get it tilled under for winter and start over next year.

Look on line they call it "green fertilizer". The roots open up the soil too. IT is very easy to plant I just till and broadcast spread it and that's it. Thay stuff will grow anywhere. Just don't plant it to early like I did last year IT was 10 inches tall by spring and I had to mow it before I tilled it

I do that almost everyrear. Green manure. Till it under in Spring. Don't let it get to tall or it will be a pain. Not doing it this year. Using chicken manure in the Fall

I use donkey manure on mine. A local guy has all I want. I put 2 truck loads on two years ago and still reaping the benefits from it. h.h.
