I have seen some nice bucks both east and west of the park in the crop fields off the highway and the country roads to the east.

I found a huge buck dead by the river in the park several years ago....river bottoms are just awesome travel corridors for deer and all wildlife

Looks like I'm making this hunt too. How often do they hunt this park?

It's been years since I've been down there. It sure looks like a fun place to try. I might have to put the canoe on top of the car in case I kill one way back on the river?

That field to the west, near the river, is usually filled with deer right about dark.

.....no problem Gundude......I'll just hunt.......and shut up about those and "their ways" that need to be seen as "just fine".

Bed you lay in......

But yeah you're right.....I need to practice following my own signature line more often .....my bad.

What's the beef with the State Park deer reduction hunts?

I thought the park reduction hunts are all about wildlife and forest management?

No beef on the reduction hunts......but a big beef on how many abuse the "reduction" hunt and never take does. Just let them file on by .....and only interested in the big rack they want. If they don't see it...not a shot gets fired. They know who they are.....

I have to agree with Dew on this one. It amazes me how many guys I see leave the park hunts with only a buck. The point is to reduce the herd with any deer that gives you a clean shot. At the Brown County hunt I took a doe, because she gave me the first clear shot, then saw a nice 8 was chasing her, but I ended up missing him. I see these park hunts as freezer filling time for me. Saw some posts on Facebook of guys filming the park hunts and they only shot bucks. I asked if these were the only deer they saw all day, but I got no answer. I'm not saying they all do it, but I can about guarantee a lot of those guys with bucks only, only came to kill a buck.

I've had several guys admit that its strictly a horn hunt. I try to shoot the first 3 legal deer that come by. Missed a doe and shot a doe on the first hunt. Like Dave I see it as freezer filling time.

When it comes to park hunts I could care less how big the rack is... It is free deer to me....

I never thought this was a big problem. Maybe it is or maybe it is a few who can't see the larger management objectives of these hunts due to their selfishness.

One simple fix, nobody takes home antlers.

See who still shows up to hunt. Didn't they not allow anyone to take home racks when the park hunts first started?

Correct. At the first hunt they did not allow antlers to be taken home and guys whined like babies about it. It was necessary because it took a lot of effort from a lot of guys to even get the parks hunted instead of sharpshooting. It was amazing how guys who never had lifted a finger to help get the parks hunted whined and griped about not being able to take the antlers. Actually it wouldn't be a bad idea to go back to that because the hunts aren't supposed to be about "recreation".

This is the first year I've put in for the park hunts. I don't think there is anything wrong with keeping a buck from there. For some guys those are probably the only times they get to have a decent chance at a good buck. I'll be completely honest I put in for the hunts for the opportunity at an additonal trophy buck and wouldn't put in if a buck wasn't an option. That being said I was going to follow the instructions and shoot the first three deer I saw. Unfortunately the only deer I saw were two bucks. I took the first and the smaller of the two.

I go to WW each year if I get drawn. I hunt w/ the same 3 guys each year and we go just to hunt some place different. Park hunts for us are meat hunts and we will shoot anything we see. Over the years I have killed 7-8 deer there and only 1 buck. They want us to reduce the herd, that is what we do. With seeing fewer deer this year than ever, it will be good to use the park hunt and leave our resident deer here alone.

Go to WW this Monday and Tuesday and hope to get 1-2. First deer w/in range gets taken.
