Hope I've pick the right cows to put in the barn to have calves this week. A wet newborn won't make out in the pasture very long in that kind of weather! I'll be patrolling night and day to be sure.

That blizzard was horrific on the pheasants in NW Indiana. I remember helping deliver and place xmas trees for the birds. Lived in West Lafayette at the time. This should be interesting.

Dave , do you know what the main cause of death was for the pheasants in that storm ? They suffocated(sp?).
They got in cover to get out of the cold and snow . Snow covered the cover up to the point they could not get out . Ran out of air and died where they were .

Old, after the storm we found a lot of birds dead in brush piles and cover under the snow. The brush piles we created after the storm helped those birds that got out initially and then had little cover to then get into. Just outside of Earl Park there was a field created with about 100 Xmas trees that you'd see literally a couple hundred birds gathered there for a couple of weeks. The guy I hunted with those days then put out good for those birds.

No doubt a lot of good was done with the "brush piles" . I was just relating what the state biologist said after checking dead birds that we found .
I would suspect the amount of snow build up had a lot to do with it .Many of the fence rows that I hunted at the time were covered completely with 2+ feet of snow . Birds had no way to get out of them and simply ran out of air .I was also referring to areas that were there before and during the storm ,not after it.

Just west of Fowler there was a farm that John and I had permission and with a fence row of high briars and weeds that had dead birds everywhere when the snow melted. Most of the habitat I hunted back then is now barren ground and has been for years.

Ive never seen a covey of wild quail up here since that blizzard. I have hundreds of hours and many miles behind rabbit dogs since then and not one quail have I seen go up. h.h.

Snowing hard in West Lafayette

I seen six quail birds walk by my ground blind last night.

Geez.. don't make that public.. quail ate hard to find anymore...

I flushed a whole covey (probably close to 2 doz birds) on public land a couple years ago.

I don't hunt them, but it was an awesome sight.

Had over two dozen flush out of the standing corn while shelling it this fall. But we actually leave waterways, and some fences for them. Wouldn't shoot one if I were starving though. It has POURED rain all day here. Most of the snow is about gone. Thats going to change though…..

Putting snow down fast since 8-9am. Ive got an easy 8" so far today and had about that much on the ground and its suppose to snow till midnight. Heavy, wet snow so I hope we dont lose power when the high winds kick in. Not a good situation here. h.h.

Just cleared drive for the third time. News says we are pushing 11" here in West Lafayette. I believe it, getting windy as well

What a day its been!!!!

shoveled the drive twice today I will be back at it in the morning. Oh well no work for me Monday. We are in a state of emergency up in NE Indiana. Probably close to 12 inches of powder & iffy ice on the pond, so I guess it's a good day to clean the garage!

Weather service has updated the expected snowfall to 16" and added a blizzard warning. I just hope we don't lose the electricity. h.h.

We've had no power for 7 hours and apparently might not have any for 48 hours. Should be interesting. Git one generator running the sump pump and will likely have to crank the other tomorrow to run a small heater, unless I decide to try to wire it to the furnace.

Good 10" here so far, not sure if its still snowing or not wind is blowing so hard. I've plowed the drive 3 times and you can hardly tell I did anything. It'll be 3-4 feet deep by morning. The ATV will never be able to plow that. Guess I'm officially snowed in
