I am considering buying a rifle for hunting deer. I grew up hunting with a shotgun and have just stuck with it. I have a 30-06 that I hunt with in Alaska. I really enjoy shooting that gun. It is very accurate for long ranges and less recoil.
What caliber rifle would you recommend for Indiana. This would be for an adult male. I would like something something accurate for long ranges that is more pleasant to shoot then the 12 gauge slug gun. I have also considered a new muzzleloader. Please give your thoughts on that as well.

There are lots of good options. I just got into PCR's but really like the .44 magnum ballistics for less than 100 yards (99% of my shots). I have the handi rifle and am impressed with it's accuracy and construction. I needed something I could get off the shelf ammo for.

The .357 Max is popular, along with lots of other wildcats, for the reloading aficionados.

Have not shot slugs in years: .50 cal Encore and .44 Handi dead on to 100 yards. Not to knock the .357 but when I was looking it seemed the .44 had better ballistics especially at the longer distance.

Just remember, your limited to what you can use here in this state......You can use a 30-06 for coyote, but not deer....go figure ...

Good luck finding any ammo for the .44 mag. I too was going to get a 44 mag barrel for my Handi-rifle but there is no where to get the darn ammo for it.

Orion arms in Clarksville had plenty of Hornady Leverevolution 44 mag ammo.

44 handi and I shoot fiocchi brand ammo that can be bought online. Cheaperthandirt.com

Groups great to 100 yards and beyond. My load drops quick past 100 but still groups well.. I really don't shoot deer w it past 75 due to where I hunt.

Consistent luck is nothing more than hard work and preparation.
