Is there anyone in the northern part of the state that owns this rifle that would let my son take a few shots with it? We live in Syracuse near Tri-County. He's 7 and has been practicing a lot with his .22LR and I'm wanting to get him a 44 Mag so he can deer hunt next season. I'm planning on getting it for Christmas but I want to make sure that he's able to shoot it first and also not be scared of it before I spend the money. Thanks!

You are looking at about 11 ft lbs of recoil. I find it very manageable for kids to shoot.

So much depends on the load and weight of the rifle though.... I would let him shoot mine if closer..

I just got a HR handi rifle in 44 mag. I love this thing and can't believe I messed around with slug guns and did not get a PCR sooner!

Thanks for the info. I'm looking at both the H&R Handi rifle youth model and also the CVA Scout compact.

another consideration would be a .357 mag. He could shoot reduced recoil .38 specials to practice, hunt with .357 mag loads now

Then when he got bigger, get it bored to .357 max for some extra power and range. Just an idea.

My daughter and myself for that matter use a 357 mag, lever! Love it, my buddy uses a 44 and although I do like it, I like my 357 better! She took a deer at 75 yards with no problem! Shoots 2" circle at 100 yards with hornaday leverevolution ammo!

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

.357 Handi Rifle now and later when she grows up you can ream it to .357 Max which is an outstanding 200 yard deer gun with fairly light recoil. h.h.

Luke started shooting a .44 at 7 years old and he is always on the small side of the growth scale. The .44 is a great gun and he is now 12, so he has been shooting it for 5 years.

What I have learned is make sure you get a youth stock as it will fit and feel better, especially if scoped. I put a Sims recoil pad on it to take down the recoil even more. Worth the $ IMO. We started out w/ a red dot scope and he shot it well. Shoot with ear muffs as it is quite a bit louder than the .22. Sometimes the noise freaks them out.

This is my Daughters 44 which is the H&R with a ATI M4 style grip and stock. I went with the stock to get it to fit and also if I wanted to use the rifle I could just extend it to fit me. I did add the scorpion recoil pad just this year.

Do to ammo being slim on the shelves She used the 240gr SP white box bullet by Winchester this year and had a beatiful mushroom round after harvesting her deer. I would say 90% weight retention on it. Very very pleased and recoil was perfect for her.

I did have to drop the trigger assembly and lighten it up. Very easy on this rifle but if not experienced a gun smith can knock this out in no time.

Great idea on stock. Love it on my AR platform so wife and I can both shoot same gun.

Consistent luck is nothing more than hard work and preparation.

It'll fit any of the H&R 357 or 44 receivers. Easy to install with a long extension for your socket. After installing just figure out what hole on the stock fits and put that at the same position for you or kids/wife. Payton is adjusting the stock in the photo. She shoots hers completely to the front position for her eye relief now with the recoil pad installed.

You might want to use the cheekrest for proper fit. Her accuracy improved big time with this set up. She controls the weapon better by utilizing that grip.

I do have to say after reworking the trigger and finding the right load on this rifle it's producing 1.5" - five shot groups at 100yds.

We did put a 3 point tactical sling on it after she saw my AR but that required drilling and tapping into the left side of the grip. She now stands there with it slung across her chest barrel down. I see her military future already lol

Buy the cva....if you can find one ? I spoke with the factory and they said they are made in Spain and not going to be in production again until Nov 15, to try about a month after that and they would let me know what stores were going to get them. I am looking for the scout 2, stainless camo. Good luck....They look like a much better built gun then the H & R.

Well I ordered my son's H&R .44 mag last Friday and is suppose to be here tomorrow. Now the hard part is waiting for Christmas to give it to him. I'm in need of a scope and plan on putting a 3x9 on it. My question is can I just get one with the standard eye relief or do I need the extended?

I put a standard eye relief redfield on my H&R 44 rifle and love it.
