Anybody have any experience snaring for coyotes using a stop to try and minimize killing domestic dogs and holding yotes in them? Ive got some im going to build and bought some relaxing washers but they still seem pretty tight when pulled shut.

dogs will sit there as if on a leash usually. Only time a critter is dead is if it hangs itself

Agree with trapperdave. Coyotes usually go berserk in a snare, and sometimes hang themselves if there's enough brush or trees nearby. But Fido usually just lays down and quietly gives up.

BTW other than a hunting dog on a hunt, its illegal to allow pet dogs to roam free, anywhere & anytime. So if you catch someone's pet, the owner of the pet is in large part to blame.

You can put a stop 11" from the end and make a live catch snare. You will never be 100% save from killing a trespassing dog in a snare. h.h.

The above three posts are correct. You can do what you want. But, the same stop you put on them for domestics will also work for coyotes. Not a good idea unless you want to loose and educate a few coyotes. If you give them too much time to get out, they will. They WILL chew through a cable restraint. I want them tangled and incapacitated in short order.

If your washers do not easily relax, you might want to be sure your cable diameter is compatible with the holes in the washers. Not all cab;e is the exact size as advertised, and could be a tad big. If that is not it maybe bit of rust, paint, or even dye can keep them from opening up. Work the washers back and forth on the cab;e several times and see if they loosen up.

If your snare loops are 15" or less in circumference you don't need them at all. I'm like Yaz, would just as soon they be dispatched when I get there and pets shouldn't be out there anyways.

our regulations don't allow us to use the good snares. Check out the senneker snare setup. This guy catches hundreds of coyotes in Alberta each year and has developed a spring lock which kills them in seconds WITHOUT any sort of entanglement.

I shoot for entanglement with coyotes. I want them dead when I get there. If they die quick, you don't have to deal with the "water head" issues when you skin them.

Agree with the above posts. These guys snare way more yotes than I do. In my experience, most domestic dogs won't fight the snare and can be cut loose. Be sure you always have your cable cutters with you...

I'll check my holes in the washer to make sure i got the right ones for my cable.

I've seen some that say not legal in Indiana. Did i miss info in the regs? Only thing i saw was about 15" cir and relaxing locks?

If you are snaring yotes you will need a relaxing lock in order to make a loop big enough to catch them and be within the law. 15" circumference would make a loop to small for yotes.

I use the 12-12 rule for setting yote snares, 12" from the ground and a 12" diameter loop. h.h.

Ah, circumference and not diameter....

Does anybody have preferences on what washers are more relaxing than others?

I use mirco-loc locks and had good success with them. Ive caught my neighbors 2 dogs twice and released them alive both times.

I am a fan of those also. I like a nice small lock, not the big round relaxing lock.

Those big round ones are too hard to hide and really stand out in my opinion.

I agree with everybody on the micro-locs. However, the small washer locks are ok also. I recycle all of my old snare parts after a catch, so I still have a ton of washers. When I do buy new parts, i get the micro's. Here is a simple solution to keep the coyotes form keying in on the lock, and stalling out. A leaf, with a very small twig stuck through it to keep it in place. Also, if you take two pair of fence pliers, and open the washers up a VERY, VERY little at a time, you can get them to slide and open easier. Be careful though, don't wan them relaxing to the point the snare opens too easy.
