tripod the coon! he had a very nicely healed leg. He got away once, but not twice. This is likely the last one of the season for us, not we are going after some more coyotes and beaver.

my trapping buddy, he is 4 years old and has 3 years trapping experience.

Nice catch chevy! Good luck with the coyotes and beavers. I had a sow coon in a snare today. Got the 2 DP's chopped out of the frozen ground this morning, and pulled a couple other traps that had just been sitting in the barn. Hung 8 more snares in front of this weather today. I think the coyotes got me figured out………..although I did have one right on a #3 that was frozen up. Pan dropped, but the jaws were locked in…..This guy has been hanging around for a week or so.

Tristan nabbed this little blonde female over the weekend as she was trying to slip thru the fence.

Hunter's last day coon. Looks like this one is going to get filled with foam and find a place on the fireplace mantle.

Yep, that's a nice looking coyote. Congrats on the catches. Yaz, I caught 2 like that last year, nothing like a grinner messing up a good coyote set. mad

Well, mounting the coon wasn't exactly Hunter's idea, or mine. Probly gonna jinx myself by saying this, but momma said it was a real Purdy one and would look good mounted. Can't argue with that!!! smile

That yote, Tristan decided he wants to do a shoulder mount out of it. I'll foot the materials bill for now, but he'll pay for it over the summer. laugh

Videoing them sure gives you some insight on just how spooky they are when they work a set. He is just about as nervous without the skunk! laugh Its the same coyote I posted a picture of last week. He is working around a dozen snares in the fence, which surrounds where he is at. Also have 4 traps in the ground close by. Two within 60 yards on the lane he is walking on. Sharp critters!!!! Only thing I can figure is he is jumping the fence, or squeezing sideways through a gate. Just have not had enough snow to pinpoint him….

Same challenge here Yaz....only the smartest ones are still walking! We have enough snow here to tell the tale though. They're crossing everywhere except where my 19 snares are placed. I'm heading back out to hang another 3 or 4 cables today. Still may not snag the clever ones, but not quite ready to give up yet wink

I'm not giving up yet either Sticksender. I caught ten last year, I'd like to match that. I'm not complaining that there are not as many around though!!! I knew of three different coyotes still running around. I'm sure there are more. jcw-hoyt on here helped out with that tonight!!!! Now there are two that I know of running around…... laugh I set two more cables in a NASTY blackberry patch tonight. I noticed a really good tunnel with coyote tracks on it when Weedy and I were rabbit hunting it.

Well, this old boy was at a disadvantage….unlike the few remaining locals, he didn't know where I am hiding the snares!!!! laugh I will say, they have been a colorful batch this year.

so many of them that you guys have caught this year look like they have some domestic mix in them, although I'm sure that isn't so.

Yaz I don't buy into the coydog thing but that ones snout seems short and fat for most yotes I have seen. This one and the pic of the real pretty one you posted earlier makes me wonder almost

Nice catches guys. Im amazed you have no snow down there, we've got 8-9" here. I had my snares tripped for a few days do to heavy wet snow but reset them in the snow we got today, another 2-3". h.h.

Yaz, you need to go to taxidermy.net with that one, the guys on there would take that one in a heart beat. I would say $200.00 easy.

HH,

We just have not had that much this year. I'm NOT complaining after last year!!! The ONLY downside has been keeping track of the coyotes has been tough. It was 6 here this morning, and is suppose to be back up in the 50's by the weekend. Talk about a nightmare keeping leg holds working!!!! As Nick has found out!!!!

SCHALL53,

That thought has crossed my mind. Being a taxidermist myself, I'm on there all the time. However, the sad truth to this one is, he had already rubbed off. Its hard to tell by the pictures, but around his neck, shoulders, and back is really bad. He won't even sell on the fur market……..Here is a closer view of him. You can see there is not much guard hair left….

We didn't get a whole lot of fresh snow here. But just enough to show last night's action.

[Linked Image]

This set pictured below had only been there 3 days. Too fresh. The yotes previously had been passing right through and hopping over the log in the middle of the pic below the loop.

From the tracks it was pretty clear what happened...the yapper was walking straight into it, but stopped right at the log and must've smelled something on the metal, or my scent on the brush. So he backed up, tried to turn left, but I had that all brushed in. So he whirled around and walked straight back out the way he came. Crap!

[Linked Image]

But this next set had been hanging only 48 hours. It was in a real tight brushy tunnel, that the snow a few days ago had shown as a hot crossing spot.

I'd made that set real quick....got in and out fast without needing to brush it in. Didn't leave much scent apparently. Score!

[Linked Image]

And then this female below was hung in a set that's been a real hot spot all season, having caught 4 there so far this year.

In spite of the swivel, she had the 3/32 cable shredded down to the last few strands...yikes!

[Linked Image]

Re-setting and re-brushing the spot took a while. I used a battery drill with 12-inch 0.500 masonry bit to bore holes in the frozen ground to "plant" new brush. Gotta keep it natural looking for the next yapper wink

Dave all the sets are on one straight 500-yard stretch of lane that bisects two open fields. You can see it in the first pic above. This spot is on the second terrace above the Wabash river.

In the past I'd make sets in all the fence rows surrounding the fields, but soon realized that's the wrong approach. You end up putting human scent all over the place and turning the yotes away. With this set-up, they can cross the open fields and hit the snares before crossing my foot trail.

SS SCORES!! Way to stay after them man! It seems like I am getting "strangers" moving in now. After seeing your post, I can't WAIT to get home and check for tracks.

I seem to get the same types of refusals too Greg. The ones you can get in, and out quick seem to start working sooner. Also, I ALWAYS try to approach making a set from the side, and not go in on the trail they pass through on. Sometimes, I just can't help it. Like in really thick areas. I may be wrong on this, But I have noticed refusals on snares that have been there for weeks, and scent shouldn't be an issue. Those types of sets all had one thing in common…...After looking at these kind of situations, I think they SEE the snare outlined against the white background of the fields. Its not possible all the time, especially in the situation like you are snaring, But I have been TRYING to get my sets back off the edge, and deeper in the brush and weeds to try to get them to blend better.

Yeah it's hard to make heads or tails of it sometimes. Like the spot in my pics above with the female caught. That snare is on top of a little open knob, making the snare loop as "sky-lined" as it could possibly be. But still, they keep walking into it?

Judging by my trail cams, most of the action where I have these sets is night time, so perhaps they get more use from their noses than their eyes for these particular sets. Down over the hill in the thickets of the river bottoms (where they bed), and where I don't have any sets, I get a lot more daytime trail cam pics of the yappers.

Trying to get some of these late ones (i.e. smart ones) I think my best strategy is to keep placing more new sets in more new spots.

Hopefully this snow cover will last a few days...it sure does help!

You can see there is not much guard hair....

What a shame that is one neat colored yote.

Looks like everyone is still kicking butt on the yotes. I have worked 15 of the last 18 nights 12 hours shifts so not alot of time to check the site. Keep it up as I got a day off then back for 5 more. Good thing is I have already paid for my turkey and crappie trip to Missouri in May. cool
