Nice catches Nick and Tony. When the ground freezes, last year I used pet moss and table salt. Still had some issues with it freezing though but usually just after a rain or thaw situation like Yaz said. I start setting more snares when it freezes like this.

What I do is obviously not the only way, but What I have learned from many years of cold weather trapping. You can't completely eliminate traps from freezing. Once it gets cold and STAYS that way you can. But a rain and freeze, or afternoon thaws and freeze can be tough. I can keep traps working in just about all conditions but the hard freeze after a rain. Nothing works with that situation, including peat, coveralls, or Calcium.

I use Calcium Chloride and VERY dry dirt from under barns or any other dry, odorless dirt source. Another little trick is to use waxed paper directly under the trap, jaws, and spring levers. I use wax paper most of the time as a pan cover, so I already have it on hand. Its best to cut or tear a piece to the right size to go under your trap. Wad up the paper into a tight little ball to break up the wax so it doesn't crinkle and make noise. Then bed your trap on top of it. The wax acts as a mold release so to speak.

I use Calcium Chloride over regular salt (Sodium Chloride). Both are hydroscopic, and draw moisture from the ground and air. However, Calcium Chloride produces a lot more heat from the chemical reaction as it draws water, and has a lot lower freezing point. So, it keeps traps working better in the colder temps. I buy the flake CC (don't get the pellets) from feed stores. I also run it through the blender and pulverize it. That way it blends in the dirt a lot better.
It is cheap! Dad and I have been using a 50lb bag for 6 years or better, and still have almost a 1/2 bag left.
So, my sequence is this:
Dig trap bed and get it level and where you want it.
Sprinkle entire bed with a light coat of CC.
Put in wax paper.
Bed trap
Layer dirt inside and outside trap.
Another layer of CC.
Final sifted cover over trap.
Light layer of CC.
Light layer of sifted dirt to cover CC.

Don't be afraid to USE it. I sprinkle it a couple inches outside the jaw spread around the entire trap. The only downside is it does leave a dark spot where you sifted dirt over your trap. That is from the moisture. I've never notice refusals from it though.
great info.. thats pretty much the way I do it but better said.

We spent 3 hours today re-doing sets and putting new areas out. I think we put out just about everything we have except a bunch of snares. We are waiting for snow.

Luke put out some pocket sets, dp's and snares.

Got my fingers crossed for you Bean because it had to be cold out there today doing that.

Tell Luke that's a good looking set, should definitely connect with coon or mink. I caught another coyote today, couldn't believe the trap went off as most of them were frozen. Pulled them all today and gonna reset at a different spot in a few days. Had her by one pad on her foot.

Looking good bean and Luke! Hope you guys catch a bunch. Done a little scouting for mink sets myself tonight. Another good catch Gilley!!! One less predator! I was going to put out some traps tomorrow or Friday. But, they now are saying up to an inch of rain on Saturday.....then back cold again next week. I may just hang a few snares and wait on the traps till it freezes up again next week.

Nice catches everyone. Been slow for me the last couple of weeks. Wife had surgery and it slowed me down a little. We put out several coon and coyote sets yesterday, but i think the cold weather slowed the coons down a little only caught 1. I also come to the conclusion that the vermiculite is no better the peat moss other then I think it is a little easier to bed the trap in. We are still using antifreeze on the sets. I also decided to buy a few beaver traps and let me be the first to say that a MB750 is one he!! of a trap to set. I bought 3 MB750s and a half dozen 330s. Set a 330 on a beaver slide yesterday and a 750 on a castor mound. Made sure to have plenty of water over both sets but I wasnt planning on the creek dropping 8 inches over night. needless to say I had not caught anything and now I get to remake the sets after the water gets back to a normal level. I have to go back to work tomorrow but my buddy is going to run the sets for the next few days. maybe the little warm up will help out this weekend.

We got a first today for us. I made a couple DIY colony traps for rats. We put them out yesterday and I caught one the first night out.

Evan stayed the night with Luke. We spent the morning trapping and squirrel hunting. Our mixed bag for the day.

Wet check today. We walked A LOT since the fields were so soggy. Lesson learned about the weather. Wish I had tripped everything yesterday.

Did catch another rat today. 3-3 in the colony trap.

Congrats Bean. We drove to Louisville today and the amount of water standing in the fields was impressive.

1 coon and 1 grinner this morning. pulling everything tomorrow and getting ready to move to a new spot. I work at a golf course on my days off during the summer and I got the OK to trap it. Also got a text from a friend that would like me to trap on his place since deer season is done. 700 acres at the course and his chunk is 500 acres. Think I need to order more traps.

We pulled all the traps today since its nothing but mud. Will wait for it to freeze up tight then set some yote traps out. Did catch 3 grinners today and had another first. Caught a grinner by the bottom lip. Sucker must of had one heck of a powerful tongue. laugh

Bassbum - is that a push/pull dp?

Our catch today. Nothing out now but some snares. Creek is up and muddy, emptied all DP's so the bait will not freeze inside. I can't wait for some snaring in the snow.

It is a Z-trap with the push/pull trigger. If I had to buy again I would go with a different brand. I feel the spring is just to stiff and causes alot of broken bones. I have daggers with the same trigger set up but not a fan of the V shape spring. The dukes are nice once you get use to setting them with something stuck on the trigger. From what I have read the Z traps will no longer be made because the coon dagger got his patent on the trigger system which Z_trap copied.

69 coons
19 possuums
6 coyotes
21 muskrats
3 skunks
1 mouse
1squirrel
