Caught 2 coon this morning, one of them looked like he had been caught in a snare or something. He was raw to the meat and looked infected across his belly behind both front legs. Tried to skin him but he just came apart there.

Nice ones Chevy, did you use a drowning rig or did you have to dispatch them?

some of both, I like the drowner rigs but don't always have the water depth to use them

Hey all you guys catching skunks I got a question that's gonna make you think I'm crazy. With what bait and what setups are you guys catching them with. I'm sure it's not intentional, but my mom's always wanted one mounted. I see em quite often hunting but never tried messing with one. Gonna on after one, the things we do for our moms!!! Any tips??

"Any tips??"

Yeah go buy a mount already done. smile

I have caught them in every kind of trap I own and with every bait I use. Especially under/around old barns.

Got an old barn but it's got a concrete floor. Guess I'll have to set up shop around it. My dad is the one who will have to skin and mount it. Haha

Yep. The fur buyers took a hit last year and are pretty gun shy at the moment. Last years prices were double or more than what we have now.

I have just been turning around and buying more supplies or using it for gas money. Breaking even with that.... so far.

I can't remember who told me, as it was a while back. It may have been Charlie. But the rumor is the Amish fellow up North that is a big buyer, got left holding 20,000 hides!!!! Most of which were coons.

I wouldn't loose all hope in prices just yet but there is no way I would sell to a local fur buyer this year. Have better odds sending them off to auction and hope it pays off. This would also be a good year to tan a few hides which is what I'm doing as a side job this year and so far have been pretty busy.

I have held a taxidermy license for too many years to remember now. I would think with having the license a person could hold back selling until the next year in hopes of better pricing. It could be a pain, but under that license, I can keep furs in the freezer until the following year or until I am ready to process. I must follow the taxidermy rules of tagging, and logging each fur in on a spreadsheet to be made available to the C.O. upon request. I do not see why that would not apply to fur or critters to be processed to sell as dried hides.

I just Did my first beaver and it was perfect for hanging on the wall. I am going to try a different oil on the next one and see if that helps but honestly it's all in how much time I want to take into breaking it down as I'm doing it all by hand. Give me a text or call me at 8125607582 and we can discuss more details.

The tanning only price is 18.75. I also tan and skin for additional pricing. So far I have done several coon muskrat yotes and one beaver. In the process of doing a mink and skunk now

Chevy yotes are still holding a pretty good value this year. Coons on the other hand hopefully they will hold over for next sale before they let them go for nothing

Got a friend that buys and he dropped prices this week after seeing what happened with the Michigan sell over the weekend. He also got a call from his buyer that told him to drop again after Christmas due to to bottom falling out even more. Looks like yotes are the only thing that are holding in value. From what I hear this first sell at NAFA might fool alot of folks due to it will only be selling select goods which will make the % sold and the average price look better then what most people will get. I hope it works out for everyone sending. I went ahead and sold mine green and with what little money I have gotten I will put into a few more traps and keep having fun.

After last year, can't complain one bit. Had enough to buy supplies for this year, and a couple other toys……..I may just roll mine up, stick em in the freezer, and hold on for a while.

Gilly, the "old timers" always told me those were "ground coon". By that, they meant that color of coon typically indicated it lived in holes in the dirt, and not in the trees. Said the iron in the soil stained the hide/hair. I know they do not get graded very well because of the color.

Trying something new to me tonight. After seeing no sign all winter the beaver have showed up and are destroying the soybeans in my deer food plot. Have 4 active slides! I borrowed some 330's and got a little instruction today. Put one at the end of each slide in the river. Now to wait until tomorrow and see if I can catch any. Just like everything else, we'll see if this rookie can connect.
