I'm posting this to see if any of you wise hunters can give me some tips on some effective tactics to killing an early season buck, besides "patience". Take note, I'm hunting farmland deer where they have all the corn and beans they need. If I can get some tips that can help get me a buck in the month of October, that'd be great! Ears are open

1. Pray for a cold front and hunt during it.
2. Pray for huntable winds for your setup and don’t go into woods unless there is.
3. Pray the farmers knock it out quick especially the corn.
4. Pray for good cold weather when you can hunt and not in school.
5. Pray Katie Baby let’s you go.

Wait until there is a day that is real windy, then hunt across standing corn rows with the wind in your face. Start at the down wind end of the corn rows up about 50 yards. GO slow and stick your bow threw the corn, then your head looking up wind. Deer lay, stand between rows. If you see nothing, step thru the row to the next row. Once you get across the corn, go up 50 yards and go back across. You can hunt this way by yourself or with others. If others are hunting with you then spread out 50 yards and stagger the guys so the first guy goes in, then 5 mins later the second and so on. With the high wind deer can't hear you in the corn. Some very good bucks are killed this way. h.h.

Magnum bean and hh have great tips but in all honesty just hunt and have fun doing it. I can say I have lost that fun with in the last 5 years with all the "big buck craze" and doing what the "pros" say. This year I am goin back to my younger days and havin fun and that is all that matters

Huntin is not a matter of life and death, its more important than that

Good chance they're eating lot of acorns right now. On my place they switched away from browse, forbs, and row crops about 2 weeks ago, and are now roaming into the hardwoods at night to hit the oaks. This can mean a drastic change in movement patterns, including their use of completely different bedding spots. I believe this effect is what makes them so tough to keep track of this time of year. Up until near the end of October that is, when the bucks start thinking more about does and roaming all over in daylight.

What he said. I thought for sure it wouldn't work so I tried the other day just scouting an area. I walked within two rows of a bedded doe. Could have been an easy shot if I had my bow...She never knew I was there. Sticking your head down the rows before putting your bow through works too. But make sure you look for them on the ground a couple rows in front of you as well.

Magnum,

Tomorrow is suppose to be very windy, ideal for the corn row hunt. Nice thing about hunting this way is you are going to the deer during the day when deer are bedded and not sitting in a stand waiting on them to show up. Tomorrow evening and Sunday morning would be a good time to hunt any oaks that are dropping acorns. The deer head for them after very windy days for lots of easy pickings. Also look for fresh deer scat around the oak trees. This tells you which oaks they prefer. Good luck, h.h.

Big Cold Front Coming in on Sunday - Should be good inclement weather cold and windy - perfect for stalking. Beans were cut 2 weeks ago and it looks like Corn was going to be cut soon as well. Several farms had 50 meters of corn cut along the outside of all land.

Should be good. If not, in 2 weeks out comes the doe-in-heat urine and drag rags.
