About 8:40 opening morning I shot this cool non-typical 8 with my Savage 30.06. First deer with that rifle. Very nice results.
He is definitely the biggest bodied deer I have ever killed. Too big to drag so we checked him in and then boned him out in the field. That was a relief.
He has great mass, a cool thick sticker off the right base, a split brow on the left and the beginnings of crab claw. He is very sculptural. Can't wait to do a skull mount.
Mike and I arranged to do a little push on the way out and I was able to nudge this button by him for a quick clean kill and just enough meat for his family size.
We both saw a few more deer over the weekend but no more shots. Yesterday I had 2 bucks within 40 yards, one of them a nice 2 or 3 year old 8. I should have had Mike with me
The only doe I saw would not stop in my lane. Wind buggered me a bit in the evening. All-in-all a good opening weekend.
