Training pups is A LOT of work and unfortunately they don't all turn out. I would suggest you try to get one of the volumes of the book Walk With Wick- it is a good place to start for someone just starting out.

Keep us posted how they progress. I've thought about getting back into coon hunting, did it when I was a kid and always enjoyed it... B&T and redbone were my favorite breeds...

Good luck and enjoy your new hounds!

OK... thread cleaned up... if you're not posting something related to bowhunter getting his new hounds, or how to start training hounds, or your stories about past experiences starting new hounds, then start a new thread and don't hijack this one...

get a roll cage...one of the best things to get em fired up!

NEVER discipline a dog on the tree...even if has got the neighbors cat up there.

Put reflective collars on your dogs at night

groundhogs are a good sub for coons when training. Taken out of their home range, they will quickly climb a tree wink and you can then LEGALLY shoot em out to the pups. And do it all in the daylight.

Start out with the pups tied, and drag the coon/groundhog around and to a tree they can see. Oncer they are treeing that way, tie them around the corner out of sight and make em use their nose to find it...and dont use the same tree each time or they'll just be running to it verses tracking.

give them lots of woods time...lots. Start out with day trips. get them used to crossing water.

the "walking with wick" book is a great start!

good luck.

The Wick books are a great place to start when training a coonhound. You will learn more from reading them.Than most guys learn in a lifetime of hunting..The main reason many guys keep making the same mistakes over and over again when training a dog.One of the worst mistakes is (hunting training) to young. The average coonhound pup just starts at 8-10 months old..Take it slow and easy and dont hunt a young dog to much..Dont over do drags.A little gos a long ways..Or use a cage (unless) your about ready to give up on a dog.Cage coon are way over used and can ruin a pup if overdone ...We used rolling cages we made 30+ yrs ago. They will ruin more dogs than they help if overdone..But it might help dogs that show little interest in hunting. Its still the last thing I will do before giving up on a coonhound to get them started..After a pups started you should never do drags or cage coon ever again...Thats a easy way to ruin a young pup..((The reason)) is it gets a dog so they will use there (eyes) instead of there (nose) when it comes to hunting..

well they are being kenneled for a while about 2 weeks ago i noticed some hair loose and we went to the vet. yep they have mange its not the kind we think of typically this is the kind that they get genetically from there moms and they can not pass it to any other dog or anything else but they have to go to the vet every other week for the next 6 weeks and be dipped. but be for that they were doing good played with a couple coons in the roll cage and when i let one go i let them watch it run off gave it about 10 min and let them go they trailed him about 200 yards across the field and another 50 yards into the woods be for treeing him i was so happy and they were to when i shot him out. so ill re start the training when they grow all there hair back and are healthy again

its not really hereditary. its a mite that they all have, they get it from the mother. All dogs have them, but sometimes they get out of control due to a weakened immune system(in your case because theyre pups). I hear a good home remedie is peroxide mixed with borax. apply and let dry, repeat in 4-6 days if necessary
