Re: 2013 Hog Hunt - 01/15/2013 08:51 PM

For thosse driving to ranch here is directions fron San Antonio........

I410 south to highway 90, go west on 90 to Sabinal. Turn right on highway 187(north) go about 15 miles, left side of road is red white and blue anchor 6 foot tall. Turn left on drive just before anchor, it will save you several gate openings.

Again each person will have a $15.00 house fee for Wednesday night. Also we will have a few dollar(less than 10) for dinner Wednesday and Breakfast on Thursday(not included in hunt package). I think Deb said she is cooking........LOL!

Eight people are flying from Indy, a van to hold 8 was over $800.00 for the trip. Bill Meyer has reserved two cars, cost should be around 1/2 of the van! All luggage short of a carry on must be at my house on Sunday Feb 16, guns included. There is no room for laggage in cars for 4 people each. As in the past $50.00 per person for expense of guns and luggage going south and dead hogs back to Indy. Bring all adult beverages you need on Sunday, will take them in coolers that are empty. Hope coolers are full of hog coming back.

Questions ask them here...........

Three weeks from now we will be at the ranch preparing to hunt.Below is a list of what I expect as associated costs to the hunt. Just a general idea of cash needed to complete the deal. Tips are up to the individual as to what value you place on the experience. the rest are close in dollars.

License $50.00

Ranch house additional night $15.00

Dinner & Breakfast at ranch $10.00

Guide tip $100.00

Cook Tip $40.00

rental car $50.00

Gun and transport (Indiana guys)$50.00 To Joe

Total $315.00

Figure a few bucks for meals on way and return and misc.......

BE SURE to bring what you need, nearest walmart is 50 miles!

For those flying from Indiana, bring your alcohol with your luggage. One less stop on way to ranch. Bill will stop for license on way to ranch.

Again all luggage guns and transport fee at my house by Sunday Feb 17th for the Indiana people.

Can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I confirmed again today that ATT phone service is the only one that works at and around the ranch. Tony found on line ATT "pay as you go" service. He is going to an ATT store this week and get some firm pricing for phone package of calls and text for the trip. They advertise phones as low as $1.00(used). When I have the info we will post it. If it is reasonable it would be nice to be able to comunicate with each other by text and also be able to contact Clay if needed from blinds.

It's getting CLOSE!

Weedhopper killed an absolute BEAST of a boar!

Zeb and Tony were on a terror each killed five pigs each.

My truck did not get same mileage coming back, five huge coolers packed full of meat. Anyone want to guess what we are doing this week.....

Get ahold of me Joe...I can commit 3 evenings,,days,,whatever.

I'll let Joe post his better pics, but this was the scene of the cooler before all pigs were added. There were some VERY nice sized hogs taken. Kudos to Zeb and Tony! Hog hunting machines! I had another blast with a great group of guys and Deb of course...just an outstanding hunt with good friends.

Re: 2013 Hog Hunt - 02/26/2013 02:17 PM

This is a great break from hunting in Indiana, hunting pigs between deer season and turkey season breaks up the winter duldrum. It helps when you use a great guide service who works herd to put people on hogs(and lots of them). The past couple of years the hogs had been down on the primary ranch, we were told it was because of drought, when they got rain the hogs would return. We hunted several other ranches nearby and had success. It has been a rainy fall and winter in the Hill Country of Texas and true to the guides comment the hogs returned. We did hunt another ranch(50 miles each way)but the hog sightings were basically the same on each ranch. Problem was Tony Zeb and Weed were sent there to hunt, bad news for hogs!

Anyone wanting a great hunt as promised for anything Texas has to offer contact Pope Brothers Guide service, you wont be disappointed.

One of our guides this year is the grandson of the owner of the famed King Ranch, 911,000 acres! The stories he told were worth the trip alone. He's a woldlife biologist, taxidermist, and guides for Clay part time....... an heir to the King Ranch. I think the future of wildlife and hunting on the King Ranch is safe with him

Re: 2013 Hog Hunt - 02/26/2013 07:48 PM

How does the processing work ? Everybody keep there own ? combine it all then split it ? good parts ? bad parts ? lard or no lard ?
Posted By: jbwhttail

Re: 2013 Hog Hunt - 02/28/2013 06:30 PM

My son came up with the real statistic.... 21 hogs and a conservative estimate of 100 pounds each, "we killed a ton of pigs"!

We have been processing pigs all week, will complete the project on Saturday. We make sure everyone in the group has pork. Between my son and I we took 7 hogs, no way we can use that many over the next year so we will share the bounty. Is it everyone takes their own, no we pile it up and everyone shares the bounty.

There is not any lard in wild pigs, what we have found is you can't beat the breakfast sausage and Italion sausage, we keep a couple hams and shoulders for smoking on the grill and grind the rest. Nothing goes to waste.

Looks like we are going to grind over 250 pounds of pork on Saturday!
