Coyotes today - 01/05/2018 06:01 PM

Got into one of my deer stands and used a dying rabbit call on low volume for just about 10 seconds. Waited for 5-10 mins and turned it up to med and called again. About 10 seconds later one went running down the edge of a thicket to my right but too far in to shoot. It stopped but I couldnt see it to shoot. 10 seconds later the second one ran the same trail the other one took and when it caught up with the first one they went away from me with no shot. My mistake was turning up the caller as they were right beside me but I couldnt see them. I set 3 snares in yote runs so one of them should be waiting on me in the morning. Fun day to play in the snow. h.h.

I use a Savage 11 .223 that I accurized myself. I put pillers in the stock, bedded the barrel, put in a timney trigger and set it at 2.5 lbs pull, bedded the steel scope mounts and lapped and bedded the rings. I use a 4x16 Weaver V16 scope and handloaded 69 grain Serra HPBT Match bullets with 28 grains of Varget. Its a compressed load. Cases have been neck sized only and primed with Remington 7 1/2 Match Primers. Speed is 3000 fps. This is a very accurate load in my gun and good to 350 yards. It will rip hides on the way out but Im not killing yotes for the hides. I give the yote to a taxidermist friend of mine and he makes very cool hats out of them. h.h.

I just use Winchester 55gr Ballistic Silvertips...
sight it in so I'm an inch high at 100 yds and am pretty much a dead on hold from 10-275 yds... the trajectory is that flat..anywhere within that range, I'm touchin' the heart/lungs .. it is wicked on those critters and woodchucks .. crow's are fun also, they explode in a ball of feathers ...

I have been doing a lot of coyote hunting here recently with a close friend before he heads off to college. We have always been wanting to get into it but never did, so this year we said we would and my goodness we sure have. He purchased an icotec gc300 (super simple e-caller) and I bought the next one up which is the gc350 and it is programmable. I was able to put all the sounds I wanted on it and get rid of the ones I didn't need. So far since Dec 20th we have killed 8 coyotes. All have been males except for two. He uses a 243 and I use my 30-06 with 125 grain bullets. We both got us red predator lights and they are a charm. Lately the coyote vocals have really been working good. We killed two this weekend using vocals.

Anyone got any tips for hunting daytime coyotes? No matter how hard we try it seems like we cannot call in any day time yotes but once night rolls around we can typically stack em up lol

Mating season is now so use a challenging bark call. Yotes see real far so a decoy and very good camo is a plus. Use a small stuffed toy animal with a turkey wing on a string at the end of a stake in open fields. Wind will make the wing flip around and the yote thnks hes got easy pickin's. They will come flying in. Set up in fence rows to call. Try some of the calls you normally dont use, yotes have been called at a lot by this time of the year. h.h.
