Mouth Calls for Coyotes

Mouth Calls for Coyotes - 12/18/2015 11:35 AM

I am looking to thin the coyotes out and would love to call some in. I have never done this and am looking for guidance on calls. I am not up for spending big on the electronic calls quite yet. Any thoughts on good mouth calls? Which are the easiest, best quality or value??? Thanks for your help.

Also, how much pressure do public lands see for coyote hunting? I have never seen anyone out calling in the places I hunt. But I haven't really been looking either. I'll probably try down in Monroe County by my camper next week or two.

It sure looks like fun on the youtube vids.

you can make your own caller and use your phone to run sounds for very cheap. Sounds are free online.

here is my e caller, maybe $40 invested here. All from radio shack and an old cooler to hold it all.

This thing will get as loud as you need it. I run it about 25% or so on the amplifier and less than half volume on my phone.

John the verminator that Justin recommended is a great call, I have one in my bag of tricks.

Another that I like very well is the Primos cat nip. This has become my first out of the bag call.

Im like you just don't want to throw down big money on a E-caller. I do like the e-caller that Justin made tho, may have to hit him up on the details for that one. Great idea !!!

I am going to put one of those together over the holidays. Have you had any luck with it in the field?

John
I have a speaker and amp from radio shack just like the one posted above you can have. I made one of these a few years ago and didn't use it much. I will be in Indy on Monday or Tuesday next week if you are interested, just let me know.

I've had fair to good results with diaphragm turkey calls. You can get howls, barks, squeals, squeaks, trills... My best experience has been at dusk and dawn. I have had coyotes pull cat like stalks on turkey decoys. Where to call? Good question. Walking in a ways seems to be better. With all the electronic high volume calls, you might want to be a little more stealth like and call with less volume to a smaller area and move a lot. An elevated hide can be a benefit. Take care, have fun...

True that. I've inadvertently called in several w turkey pot calls in the spring. Public land animals seem to be more wary in general but I think the approach and setup are key. They may get a few road hunters stopping at pulloffs and blind calling, howling or setting up in field edges near roads or in the first opening they come too. Walk in a bit and use a visual furry floppy decoy if you can, a ghillie suit, and then try to use the wind, they will. I'd go daybreak/evening over dark. Just seems to work better for me in limited calling success I've had.

In high call areas dont be afraid to mix up calls and use something that would seem odd to you. Yotes get educated real quick so trying something new to them is the ticket. h.h.

all good advice, I have had better luck with mouth calls (the verminator) mostly because I use them more since I can just toss it in my pocket

called one to 270 yds last week but he was on a hilltop and I chose to pass the shot with .243 rifle.

Get a howler and a cottontail plus a mouse squeeker (dog toys work wink ) and you'll be set.

Personally never cared for the electronic ones.

MFK makes some real good diaphrams, if you can use a Turkey diaphram, you can use theirs...and it keeps your hands free.... plus they have some good vid's on boodtube as for the how too's....

I like the Tally Ho for a mouth call. I can bark yip howl or growl with it and make the rabbit in distress. I've had success with a fawn bawl as well. All Predator Calls .com is a good place to pick up calls online.
