I'm not setting any until after the deer seasons are over and I get back from a Florida hog hunt January 7. I'm done buck hunting and I don't want put any pressure on the deer, so im staying out of the woods. h.h.

First night catch on Sugar Creek. Saw 3 does, one bald eagle, and making memories with my 5 year old. LOTS to be thankful for!

All mink traps were empty, snares too but the flat set had a ferel cat. I staked the hind leg of a deer to the ground in front of my game cam. The game cam is on video so it should have the cat being caught. Wont know until the next time the card is changed. h.h.

Got a few coyote traps in Saturday. Had a coyote pull out of one. Trap was stretched tight and had some dog hair in it. mad Had 2 big coon and a grinner also. Man, trying to get a big coon out of a trap even with a catch pole is something everyone should have to do once. eek laugh

loads of fun!

Toughest animal I have tangled with was a big male river otter I turned loose last year. Never seen an animal with so much fight to them. They are Solid muscle also!!

Only a matter of time before I have to turn loose a bobcat too. Plan to use the parker bow, tub on top method =)

Im getting there…..slow but sure. Just about got this set of kill poles done and ready to go…..Added quick links instead of looping the end of the snare extension over the pole. Tack welded the #10 annealed wire snare support. That will keep it in place and prevent it from swiveling around the pole. Makes for a more stable support, and quicker fire on the loaded snare.

HH,

Dad and I are going to try to go on a scouting mission this weekend, and possibly get some of these in WITHOUT the snares in place. Also have to go open up some holes in and under some fences for crawl unders. Ive got four spots on fences where I have lost coyotes in the past due to them rubbing the snares to the point of breaking. They are too good NOT to set. I am going to go ahead and set up those spots with slider cables to get them away from the fence, and to a kill pole. These are all experimental at this point. I have messed with them enough to know they work, but never seriously put them to use.

I set out one dirthole set for coyote last night. It's along a woods line which "belongs" to one of our woods and I have had a couple guys tell me to set a trap right along there. There are definitely many coyote tracks. The thing about it is, is that I put a trail camera over the set to see what messes with the set but doesn't get caught laugh

It has been slow so far. Don't know if it is the mild weather or if it is because I caught 9 females last yr behind the house and starting to put a dent in the population. So far I have 5 yotes and 1 Red fox. Here are a few pics of the catches.

Do you guys think the warm weather has been influencing to coyote movement? I have had traps out for about 10 days and all I have caught is 2 of these critters. Normally I would have had a couple of coyotes in that period of time. Maybe I just have them more under control than I think I have.

Caught 3 more over the weekend in snares. One big male that had bad fur, so I did not even skin him out. The 2 others were pretty females.

My brother in law has trapped 22 coyotes thus far this season all FEMALES!! Anyone have any thoughts as to why all females?

Re: Coyote Trapping/Snaring Thread 2015/2016 - 01/06/2016 07:43 AM

Coyotes are different than most animals When there is plenty of food and more pups can be supported they will have larger liters In this case maybe these can be adjusted But thing is coyotes are monogamous they mate for life with all those females somewhere there's a lot of males

I'll have to go back and check my records, but if memory serves me right, in the long run, its is usually 50/50 for me. Maybe a slight edge for the females overall. I do know every year, I catch mostly females early, then the males later in the season. I'm talking late january into March for the males. I assume that has to do with the breeding season, and young males without a mate out looking. Maybe its just the area I trap too…...

I had another one, pulled up on atv and as I was getting off to take a pic before I shot him he pulled his leg out and ran off. All I had was my little .22 pistol so I had to just watch him run off. mad I had him in a bridger dogless offset. I'm starting to lose faith in the offset traps. Have had a couple since I got them get out. Anyone else have this problem??

Its not the trap Gilley. You just didn't have him where it needed to be. I have had it happen once or twice, where I had one just enough to get a light catch circle, and nothing there when I got there.

Since I don't know how you are setting, a couple potential causes are:

Too light of a pan tension. They have not committed their weight before the trap fires.

Too much cover on the trap, or the trap too deep in the trap bed. To go along with that, pan covers must stay INSIDE the jaws of the trap, or the covering stays in the pan cover, and gets folded up inside the jaws, not letting them close all the way. Generally when that happens, you get an immediate pull out.

Not being careful enough, and letting pebbles and/or small clods over the top of the trap. They can get caught between the jaws, not letting them close all the way.

AND, sometimes chit just happens, and you can't get them all!!!! laugh Keep up the good work, and posting pics!!!!

But its not the offset jaws.

Yaz, I have never used pan covers and haven't had to many problems without using them. Maybe I'll start using some and see if that makes a difference. I do remember thinking when I made the set that I thought I was a little deeper than usual, that could have been it. Thanks for the advice. Coyotes are definitely crafty little fellars. I pulled my traps today since everything is gonna freeze this week, probably wait til next weekend and get them back out.

Gilley,
I started using the polyfill (Pillow stuffing) under my trap pans this yr and it has been working well for me. I know some use was paper and some use stiff screen wire.
Posted By: DawnPatrol

Re: Coyote Trapping/Snaring Thread 2015/2016 - 01/10/2016 08:49 PM

+1 on the polyfill that is what i am using too:)
Posted By: Gilley

Re: Coyote Trapping/Snaring Thread 2015/2016 - 01/11/2016 05:05 PM

Might try the polyfill. Do they ever smell it? I did cut some screen covers last year but never used them, gonna try some when I reset. Thanks for the input.
Posted By: Yaz

Re: Coyote Trapping/Snaring Thread 2015/2016 - 01/12/2016 01:43 PM

Poly works. I'd let it air out first. To me, it has that "plastic" smell right out of the bag. The downside to polyfill is when it gets wet, it will freeze up, and basically be like a rock under the pan. If it works, don't change it.

I personally cut my own from screen wire. I cut it to the shape of my trap jaws, with tabs that let me tuck it under the jaws. This also effectively increases the "kill area" of the pan. It also has the affect of reducing the pan tension a tad. I also use waxed paper that I'll roll up tight and spread back out to cover the trap. In certain instances this works better than the screen wire. I make that call at the set.

Re: Coyote Trapping/Snaring Thread 2015/2016 - 01/12/2016 07:16 PM

Wrinkled up wax paper is all I use

Can't go wrong with snares either, especially when the snow flies and your traps freeze up. I caught #13 and #14 the last two days in snares. The first was a female and the 2nd was a really nice male and he had excellent fur.

Cross staking or earth anchors of some sort (I make my own pogo style) are mandatory on votes. Tough tough critters.

Here's the thing about me trapping coyotes. I mostly trap along my land behind the house where I can easily check the traps daily with my 4-Wheeler. I just trap using snares along an old fenceline section and some coilsprings along the crop field, so I am only trapping a small section probably 500 yrds long. This is my 6th yr trapping back there and I have caught 69 coyotes to date in this small area. Unreal if you think about it.

Re: Coyote Trapping/Snaring Thread 2015/2016 - 01/14/2016 06:59 PM

I would reccomend you go with earth anchors, takes a whole lot of rebar cross staked to hold them down

It would be a full time job PB to keep them at bay. In the 3 years that I have hit them hard, I've caught 67!!!! 3/4 of those off of one 160 acre part of the farm. The others all within a mile of there.

FINALLY got 5 sets put out late last week. First check yielded a double on toons, and one yote. I wish I could get rid of all those orange ones! I've caught several coyotes at that flood gate, but knew I'd have to get the coons out the way. With this cold spell, it may hold the coons up long enough to get a coyote in one first.

About as "thrilled" as I was having to deal with his worthless, ugly orange, butt!!! laugh But, its one less coyote. I am giving them to a younger guy with more gumption than me, who is wanting to skin, and tan them to sell out of his taxidermy shop. Re: Coyote Trapping/Snaring Thread 2015/2016 - 01/24/2016 04:07 PM

Went out to hang some snares this morning and as I'm pulling up to edge of field we see something out in the field about 150 yds. Couldn't tell if it was just a clump of dirt or what, cornstalks were kind of hiding it. Then we notice it was moving a little but still not sure what it was. I got my .243 out of truck and put my scope on it and I saw a tail wagging up in the air. I thought dang there's a coyote digging a hole or something so I grabbed some shells, loaded the gun and took a knee and got it back in the scope but it still didn't look right...then I saw a second tail. Now I'm thinking WT ? So I turn up my scope and watch for a minute and realize it's 2 fox doing the nasty eek They were stuck butt to butt lol. Gotta say that's a first. Eventually they separated and ran off to my woods. Did get some snares hung in some good spots though, might get one of them in one.

He gets all kind of calls from people that……lets just say….has NO clue. SO, I get to hear some good stories. He got of call from a guy in Hamilton Co. that apparently had a pair "locked up" in his back yard. He called wanting to know "what to do about it". He couldn't understand how they got "tangled up" like that……... laugh

I saw a nice big red trot across a back pasture edge about 100 yards behind the house. Stood out big time in the snow. Later saw it 4 total times, even cutting down a wooded edge 25 feet from the house. First one I've seen here in a while and making the rounds.

Re: Coyote Trapping/Snaring Thread 2015/2016 - 01/25/2016 08:50 AM

This is how my warped mind works….. laugh This coyote has made a routine of about every other or third day, making his rounds around the pond in the barn lot. This is a small lot with fence all around. He is coming in, and going out the main gate we go in, and out of every day to feed. So snaring the main gate would be a PIA. I decided I would try to catch him on the ice……Those clumps sticking out would be an easy place for a simple scent post. Might even set two, with one a dirt hole in the bank. Since the lot is fenced all around, I would put the traps on fairly large drags. The whole reason for the drag……..This is where the bulls stay in the winter. I could just imagine the LOOOOONNNGGGG night an old coyote would have fending off the "Boys" till I go there the next day. THATS the REAL reason I want to set it!!!! cool laugh

Nice dog DP. I pulled all my traps and snares last week. I just seem to have too many other things going on right now. besides the last 3 I have caught have had bad fur. Their guard hairs on their neck are completely bare and rubbed badly. I ended up with 17 yotes, 2 fox and a handful of accidental opossums and coons. Time to get out shed hunting and prepping for turkey season.

Good season PB! After 3, and too many coons to count, I hung up my snares. There hadn't been a coyote track on the place since the last one I caught. Even talking to all the surrounding neighbors, they have not seen or heard one for a long while. Well………I drove back the long way to feed the bulls tonight, and this is what I seen. Back in action for a bit!!!! laugh Hope to snag at least one more before the ground softens up too much to drive back.

Thats my snare, along with several "used" ones just to the left of the steel post. Its soaking in the hole tonight!! laugh

Nice looking dog! You had a good season so far.

Congrats to you and all the other fur catchers.

Im ashamed of myself for not trapping very much or setting snares. Warm weather and other duties have kept me from the woods.

Continued luck to all, h.h.

I have six sets out and have caught two coyotes in the past week. Re-lured, baited, and urined all sets yesterday and brushed off the snow on all sets. Check traps this afternoon after school.
