I use to only set on runs but this year I tried a couple of different tricks. First was to set feed beds. Find where they have been sitting and eating and put a 1 or 1 1/2 trap in front of it. We put a carrot or so there for eye appeal then used a little still water lure from carmans. The other was to do blind sets. Find where the grass and weeds over hang the bank, run your foot or hand under it and some place you will feel where there is a cut bank under it. Set a 110 or a colony trap there. Had luck with both these sets this year.

110s blocking dens, legholds on every partially submerged log (muskrat toilets), bottom of slides where they enter/leave the water and feed beds. no bait needed

+1 on everything above, another option is this rat pole idea, fast and effective
