For the very short time I had to hunt this weekend, I was able to get out on Sunday morning for about 15 minutes and squirrel hunt. Right off the bat, not even a minute into the hunt, there was a fox squirrel giving me a perfect shot in the tree right next to where I was sitting. Well I shot him and that was over. And then about 10 minutes later another fox squirrel appeared in the same tree and I shot him and that was over. I got em both skinned and in the freezer ready to eat!!!

Re: Squirrel Hunting Thread - 08/19/2015 10:37 PM
I ended up getting one this evening after some terrible shooting by me. I am shooting my grandfathers old .22 he gave me when I was a kid. It has iron sights and the only problem is: when I was a kid the closest sight wasn't blurry and I could see fine!!! I missed that squirrel like 4-5 times and was pretty frustrated. Luke walked up and was giving me a hard time. I could see the squirrel hiding near the top of the tree but Luke could not, so I decided to shot at it to make it move so he could get a good shot. Not thinking I would hit it, I shot and nailed it right in the head!!!!
Time to scope it up.
Posted By: delaney
Re: Squirrel Hunting Thread - 08/20/2015 07:17 AM
Lol. If iron sights were the rule, the harvest would be pretty low. Us old guys, and you're not old yet Bean, typically can't see for crap.

Re: Squirrel Hunting Thread - 08/20/2015 05:43 PM
I was in the woods at daybreak today and shot one male in 5 minutes and that was it. Squirrels did not move or feed this AM. The one I shot was a head shot at 20yards and he was coming down a small tree with a branch in his mouth.
There were a lot of nuts laying on the ground and not much sign but I have seen a lot of squirrels this summer coming to my feeders so I know they are there.
I had Lazik on my eyes about 14 years ago and still have 20/15 in both but I tried hunting with my Remington 41P and cant see worth a hoot in low light conditions with peep sites. Its hard to knock one out of those big oak and hickory's I have. You put it on a bench and shot the center out of a target.
Luke is ahead but not by much and Im planning on going again tomorrow morning! Get the counter warmed up......
Bean and Luke,
When I lived in Kentucky I hunted with a friend and he taught me a easy way to kill squirrels when you are hunting together. Have one of you go around the opposite side of the tree and set up, have the other guy grab some low limbs about 10 yards from the tree and shake the heck out of them. The squirrel will go around to the set up side of the tree and either head down or hide, easy shot. Works every time we did it. h.h.

Good for you!
Im thinking the squirrel population up north is down this year from the hard winters the last couple years. Im seeing all kinds of nuts laying on the ground and no cuttings around. Usually this time of the year mornings are great especially with the cold ones this last week and squirrels should be on the move cutting nuts, but Im not seeing them or their sign.
In my woods its not hard to kill a limit most any time you go and 2 out of 3 times Ive seen only one squirrel. Something seems amiss and I think the cold hard winters have taken a toll on the squirrels. h.h.

Re: Squirrel Hunting Thread - 08/27/2015 11:03 PM
Got off to what I thought was going to be a quick start, starting with while I was putting on the bug spray and camo T-shirt. As I looked through the window of the car I see a gray running across the yard about 15 yrds from the car. I already had the rifle loaded, I waited for him to come to rest about 4 ft from the ground. Crack goes the rifle crack goes the miss against the tree, clean miss but sure scared the bageezzers out of him.
After that the next hr was boring, not a leaf or squirrel moving.
Circled around back to the car and took a rest on the land owners tractor tire for a bit, the I noticed about 40 yrds out into the wood I see movement atop a big PigNut hickory. I sneak in and the tree is full of gray tree rats. Limited out in just a few mins. The 541 with ely subsonics do it again.

Weed would you mind posting this recipe again? Or emailing it if you prefer sir. Thanks.
Posted By: Weedhopper
Re: Squirrel Hunting Thread - 09/04/2015 09:59 PM
Here it is, Tyson...
Mac English’s Squirrel Chowder
Ingredients
- 4 to 8 squirrels, pressure-cooked or
parboiled and deboned
- 10 cups squirrel broth (or beef broth)
- 5 medium potatoes, diced
- 2 medium onions, diced
- 2 stalks celery, diced
- 2 carrots, diced
- 1 tsp. each salt, black pepper, garlic powder
- 2 cubes chicken bouillon
- 2 oz. butter
- 8 oz. Velveeta cheese
- 4 oz. cream cheese
- 1 pint half-and-half
- 2 cans evaporated milk
Directions
Bring broth to a boil in a large pot. Add the vegetables, spices, and bouillon. Simmer until vegetables are tender. Add the squirrel meat and simmer 10 minutes. Add butter and cheeses, and simmer while stirring until cheese melts. Stir in the half-and-half and milk and warm through.
It's good stuff!! You can substitute any meat you choose..rabbit, chicken, etc. (and don't call me "sir")
Posted By: Tysonhunter
Re: Squirrel Hunting Thread - 09/05/2015 09:39 AM
Can you explain the squirrel prep portion? I/e I currently don't have a pressure cooker (but hope to soon) so from a cleaned and skinned squirrel what does a guy do with both the parks boil or pressure cooker options? The rest of the instructions are idiot proof so I comprehend lol Thanks! And sorry about the "sir" it is the way I was raised and the way my son is being raised. It dumbfounds me the looks I get when my son says "yes sir" or "yes ma'am " folks glare like I'm raising a cult child or something when I just feel it's a matter of respect and integrity and if my children had that instilled at a earlier age the world would be a slightly better place.
Posted By: Tysonhunter
Re: Squirrel Hunting Thread - 09/05/2015 09:40 AM
Also when you say 4 to 8 squirrels is that a standard vs double batch? And if so the other quantities do they double?
Posted By: Weedhopper
Re: Squirrel Hunting Thread - 09/05/2015 10:19 AM
If you don't have a pressure cooker, just quarter and cut up your squirrels as you normally would, place the portions in a pan of water and simmer until the meat can be pulled from the bones. It's really up to you on how many squirrels you want to use. The more you use, the meatier the chowder. All the ingredients stay the same irregardless, unless you want to cut the recipe in half, etc.
I was kidding about the "sir" part,,and I totally agree with your philosophy on teaching your children manners. Good on you, sir!!

No....the recipe calls for 10 cups of beef broth which you can purchase from the grocery. It's not involved in the cooking of the squirrel itself. At least I don't use it that way. I de-bone the meat and start from there.
You could use the broth you get from simmering the squirrel, but I find it easier to use the store bought broth. (I use an electric pressure cooker)

Re: Squirrel Hunting Thread - 09/09/2015 06:46 PM
With a couple extra days off and looking at a 14 day stretch starting Friday I took some time to try and wack some bushy tails. Yesterday started off good by spotting 2 grays working in a oak, I never could get on them for they were completely in the top not presenting a good shot.
At about 9 oclock as if a light switch was turned off, the cutting stopped, nothing but me and the mosquitoes and the heat.
Today got up to go and the rain had set in so I stayed in to do my domestic duties. After a couple hrs go by the rain stopped and I decided to go. As I pull into the drive I am greeted by a red squirrel running across in front of the car and into a single walnut tree. I get out and load the rifle and to no avail I could not find that squirrel. Ended up with 3 fox squirrels I only have a pic of one of them.A heavy rain set back in and didn't get a pic of all of them.
Getting ready for a wild game cook out some friends have every year.I'm going to use the chowder recipe that was posted earlier.

Next up is the chowder. I pressure cooked this one last night and finished it up for supper tonight. I added a tablespoon of beef better than bouillon to the squirrel broth and then used it to make the gravy. Next time Im adding potato's, carrots, celery, peas and onions to make it into a stew. h.h.

Hit the woods about 7:30 and didn't see anything for a while. Only saw 3 and killed them all with head shots.
I aimed for the eye and shot two thru the eyes and one just a tad low....
Two came off shag bark hickory's and one an oak.
Wasn't planning on going but Luke was getting too close..... :p h.h.

Re: Squirrel Hunting Thread - 02/22/2016 03:39 PM
Im sure you have enough fingers and toes to add them up......
I just finished eating two squirrels from yesterday that I smoked and BBQ. Man they were tasty! Just about as tasty as the deer ribs I did last weekend...yum
. Life is good
h.h.
I probably ended with only 10-15. I probably killed 25 red squirrels though, they drive me crazy deer hunting so I get them before deer is opened up
I had rabbit last night and boy it sure was good. Wasnt sure how my 2yr old would take to it, but Id bet he ate more of it than anyone else.
