Well, on a positive note, at least suppressed AR-15 pistols are still legal for deer in the appropriate calibers.

My hunting will go on just the same as it always has, but I'll admit that I think it's a shame that people weren't willing to study ballistics before commenting against the proposal. Many against it are complaining about herd numbers, and their eyes are going to be opened when they keep dwindling without even adding rifles into the mix.

Good move by the DNR for once, now to reduce the antlerless tags to 3 or below in many counties ....

That will hardly cause a dent in deer numbers declining...

First off, how many hunters are killing three, four, or more does in any one county? The answer is very very few... In Adams, Benton, Clinton, Daviess, Jay, Randolph, Rush, Tipton, and Wells Counties it isn't happening at all...

So moving LaPorte County to three just removes it from the the extra Antlerless Season... So what, big whoop, when hunters there can still use 3 bonus tags plus 2 Archery and 1 during Muzzy Season that is still 6 does that one can take out of the county... So removing that one extra deer isn't going to solve the deer numbers declining... How many does were taking last season in the special Antlerless Season in LaPorte County?... I bet very few were taking...


Adding rifles will make a very small impact on the herd numbers as hunters will just use a different weapon but still generally kill the same number of deer per year...

Seriously, if you want to make an impact then think outside the box for a change... How about allowing hunters no more then 4 does a season regardless of weapon and only ONE doe may be taking PER county... That will make a bigger impact then just moving a county number down one spot...

dnr states that HPRs wouldnt affect herd size, doesnt pose a safety concern, but the idea is dropped anyway because too many are butt hurt over the idea LOL

Poor grouse. I truely hope they can come back. Maybe in yellowwood with the timber harvest. Probably never in HNF if it never gets logged again.

Only in IN can you just use pistol cartridges in a rifle, and rifle cartridges in a pistol to deer hunt. Makes perfect sense!

All I know is at the North Region Input session in Columbia City .... That crowd was almost unanimously AGAINST the HPR's..... And many commented they were for SHORTENING the gun season.

You can now use that 300 yard .243 as a ground hog gun or a door stop....

What was looked at hard was municipalities that are concerned over "projectiles", MANY of these communities would have closed the door on deer hunting over a centerfire rifle.

While I am an advocate of using the centerfire rifles because of today's technology in other hunting tools ........... this was the correct decision.

I heard six weeks ago the "die had been cast". Just had to wait for the official announcement.

Lots of options and we both know the .243 is much too good of a cartridge to be relegated to a door stop =)

I understand the municipalities input, lots of areas in jeopardy of being closed to hunting which is not good. I hunt some of these types of "urban zones" so this of importance to me.

It makes as much sense as any gov. agency can! ZERO
I guess I'll go back to using my .300 blk pistol or slugs & shotgun.

I use my .243 for depredation permits and it's a great round for deer

The NRC meeting went pretty much as expected. The 2 items of concern for me were agenda item#9 (Forestry fees) and agenda item #10 (HPR's).

Very interesting discussion on fee increases for Parks and Forestry. It seems that there was a $4,800,000 deficit last year in these divisions. Also it was revealed that 70% of funding for these divisions comes from user fees. The last fee increase in this area was in 2006. The attached fees increases would make up that shortfall. Hunters and fishermen need to be aware that a license fee increase is in the works for us as well.

The proposed rule allowing HPR's was withdrawn. DNR views it as a social issue and sees no reason to oppose such a rule but the public is split on allowing a new weapon category. I would expect the rule proposal to resurface someday with some restrictions on it (mag capacity, overall bullet size, geographical considerations, etc).

Also withdrawn was the coyote rule allowing verbal rather than written permission to take coyotes. Seems that the statue requires written permission and would have to be changed by the legislature.

The rule limiting the bag on bluegill was also withdrawn. Fiscal issues that had not been considered by the agency were revealed in the public comment and persuaded DNR to withdraw this request.

One correction was made to the walleye issue. Now it will be a size limit of 16" on all walleye taken north of S.R. 26 in Indiana.
