Fish Stocking opinions - 05/16/2007 08:46 AM

Hey guys, I have a new pond that is approx. 1/2 acre in size. I would like your opinions on what types and amounts of fish that I should stock it with. I have put some fathead minnows in last month. I would like to stock my pond with all my gamefish by the end of the month now that the water temps are stabilizing. The pond is 18-20 ft deep at the dam. Is this deep enough to support some smallmouth if I can provide the structure in the shallows for spawning. What about Black Crappie? Will they overpopulate? Hybrid or regular Bluegill? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Stick to the IDNR site for this. I recommend using hybrid bluegills to make sure you don't overpopulate your pond since its small.

Yes your pond is deep but small. I wouldn't recommend Smallmouth bass. Stick to the Largemouth, Hybrid Bluegills and Cats
