Cape Cod Sea Duck Hunt-Awesome experience - 11/02/2014 12:13 PM

Counting the days until I head to Cape Cod with three buddies for three mornings of hunting sea ducks. Old Squaws, Eiders and Scoters are on the agenda. Possibly Brant geese and black ducks as well!

Any one ever done this? Any tips? I am hoping it is not freezing cold. We leave the 19th and hunt that Thursday, Friday and Saturday!

Hope to bring back some awesome birds as well as some pics!

you are a lucky man! have hunted Chesepeake Bay in layouts for old squaws and scoters. it is, or at least can be, a fantastic time. depending on how you're hunting, take some good rain gear because if you are in layouts and the waves get going the splash guards don't keep all the water out. if the birds are really working well, just take in the sights for a while and be less worried about a limit. sunrise can be awesome so take some good pictures. Who are you going with from a guide standpoint.

how long was your drive to get from indianapolis to where you are at in Mass? It' about 10 hours for me to get to Baltimore to hunt the bay but there are no eiders, so I need to get to where you are in the future.

These are immature eiders, two (white) more mature drake eiders, one a little immature and one is ready to mount and one white wing scoter hen. This was just part of a 4 man bag for the day!

Just a little wrap up and some photos from our trip! This was a great experience and I would not pass up another opportunity to hunt eiders! Beautiful birds and a beautiful area to hunt them! Captain Len Griner put us on birds every day and we had a great three days of hunting. Mostly bagged eiders, a few scoters and for fun we harvested some buffleheads the last day. That is one hard bird to hit!

Double banded Hen eider. Guide says she could be 10 years old. I have not followed up to see what her band dates were.

[Linked Image]

A few drakes from day 2! 16 eiders in about 22 minutes, 7 mountable birds!

Shot my birds on day 2 in about 5 minutes. Got the camera out for some fun! [Linked Image]

My big bird from day 1. Only mature drake harvested on first day, man was I pumped, I later harvested a mature hen on day 2 and will be getting the pair mounted!

Do sea ducks taste like inland ducks?

If you dont mind me asking what is the cost of a guided hunt? h.h.

Re: Cape Cod Sea Duck Hunt-Awesome experience - 11/25/2014 03:24 PM

I think it was 250/day for eiders and an extra $100 day to hunt later in the day.

We haven't ate any yet. It smells very fishy since they eat mussels. We did bring some home. Also gave some of our birds to some locals who use it in soups.

Re: Cape Cod Sea Duck Hunt-Awesome experience - 11/25/2014 04:29 PM

horn, most sea ducks have a much more fishy taste, kind of like divers here. Certainly not typically like puddle ducks. Looks like it was a very good time and my wife and I have to do an eider hunt in the near future. Sure wish I lived closer to the big waters out east.
