Goose banding in West Lafayette

Goose banding in West Lafayette - 06/22/2013 03:16 PM

Lafayette area Ducks Unlimited banded geese with the DNR this morning at Celery Bog in West Lafayette. They birds are flightless as they grow new wing feathers (see pic) so they corral like cattle and to be honest it was easier than cattle. Several bands in the bunch from past banding but several new birds received jewelry today as well! Pretty tempting to snatch a few bands to hang on the lanyard! Enjoy the pics!

B and D Do you know if any of the previously banded birds were from that area or some where's else? What a great experience. Thanks for sharing.

Maddog,

There was 105 recaptures with nearly all of them being band numbers used there 2 and 3 years ago. They did not band there last year due to little water.

I am pretty sure that the count was 290 birds caught that morning which was almost all of them on the marsh that day.
