Food Plot Plans

My hope is that I can plant my small plots that I keep in the woods planted by this weekend before the farmers get their fields planted. Here are my plans---
Cut out all of the weeds and grass in the way of the soil using a weed wacker and manual weed wacker. Rake all of the debris with a leaf rake and a metal rake. Then take a hand tiller and till all of the food plot but only going into the ground an inch or two. Afterwards, spray with round up. Wait a week or two and then plant with just some easy quick stand forage food plot seed. It's a 12 pound blue bag of seed that covers 22,000 square feet and it grew well last year. Sound like good plans?

Sounds like a great plan! No need to wait to come back and plant. Wait 30 minutes or till the roundup dries then broadcast your plot. You want your seed to germinate and get a stand before the weeds do. I would lightly rake the seed in and come back in two weeks to fill in the weak spots!

Let me know how it goes. If you get it dine this weekend it will shoot out of the ground with the moisture and temp next week.

Sounds good magnum. The only thing I would do different is skip the Roundup. It is used to kill standing, living weeds, and has no soil action. You would be wasting it by spraying onto tilled soil. You could spray the weeds beforehand with it though, instead of weed-whacking. Good luck with your plot.

This is the first year that I am going to put a plot in the woods. I had some logging done last fall and it resulted in nice spot 1/8 of an acre maybe a little more.

Any suggestions from anyone doing plots IN a woods? What to plant, when to plant, etc.

I have been working on my typical plots (not in wooded sections) the past few days as it is finally dry enough to get on them with a tractor.

My personal favorite fall plot is the soybeans or the white tail harvest salad. It is oats, rye, and austrian winter peas. Plant in august right before a rain. Mine is still knee high and stayed green all winter.

DEC we put buckwheat in June the first year in a woods plot and it worked great. Plowed the buckwheat under the first of September and planted oats rye and a little clover every year after. Will plant buckwheat after we mow the rye off if the clover isn't very thick

Daniel and I planted two nice plots this weekend. One is a long strip in a woods, be good for bow hunting. One is a big square plot on a pipeline. We tilled them both, and planted them with the throw and grow blue bag seed. Hopefully the seed comes up before long

In my area of Central Kentucky, I've also had success experimenting with oats. Clover, seems to like a sweeter soil pH.

Been getting pictures of a few different does and a buck in one of the plots. Also found a poult turkey feather in the big plot.
