JD 71 planter units-Refurbishing phase - 09/21/2014 06:14 PM

A couple weeks back I was lured into a barn lot when I saw some old planter units for sale. Turned out to be old John Deere 80 units that were in pretty bad shape. I went ahead and called the number to get a price and decided I wasn't interested. I got to talking to the man on the phone and told him I was really after 71 units. He asked if I was sitting there at the other planters and I said yes. He went on to tell me there were 11 of those units back in the shed he had not pulled out! I was out of my truck before he got that all out!!! Sure enough, 9 on a bar and 2 individuals! I was shocked that in Central Indiana, I had found my needle in the haystack. He agreed they were for sale as well and I told him I would call him back. My next call was to my dad and he was as shocked as I was that we had found these units! We agreed on a price for all of them and the buying process was on. Later that evening, I made a couple offers and ended up with 9 on the bar. Not to bad we thought! Today when we went to get them, he threw in the other 2!!! I knew he would but he brought it up and we didn't bat an eye!

Our project for the winter is to get these dudes cleaned up, painted and all in great working order (all appear to be ready to go now, just need plates). We plan to make a 2 row for our JD 1070 and then make the rest into two rows and a one row! Not in a rush to get this done, but we are hoping to share this find with fellow plotters in our area that want a great way to plant corn, beans, sunflowers etc with one unit!

We are super pumped to get on this project! I got very lucky to stumble across these. You never know what an old farmer has stashed in his barn!

Oh we will! I am sure you may see a couple on here for sale as time allows. Thinking two row models and maybe a single row model as well. We plan to keep one and maybe two! Not really sure yet!

I use a little newer, two row model of that same planter to do my bean plots every year, works great.
You might think about building a three or four row rig?

First unit all broke down and finally had time to get some green paint on it! Now if I can just remember how it all goes back together (lol)!

Third unit about done. That will give me a matched pair to get mounted on a bar and for sale! They will be set up for beans when they sell. Three point hitch, category 1 (can use bushings to cat 2).

I have had some interest in them but no one has committed. $1750/unit.

Another unit about done. This one gives us a matched pair. Just need to finish the bar and get it painted and one is ready to sell! Need warmer air! Lol!
They will be set to plant soybeans in 30" rows but can be moved wider if desired.
