I've owned several over the years. It's a nice rifle! Just play with it to see what loads it likes.

Got a hawken and a renegade. Love em both. Can't beat tc rifles for production guns imo

That was a fact....until Smith and Wesson bought them. Used to have the best customer service around. Not no more... cool

great gun, mine shot buffalo bullets best in that slow twist barrel. Won't shoot sabots well in my experience. Fun gun to shoot.

You will like it. Double set trigger may be something new to you but it's a good thing. Keep it clean and listen to the TC guys about how to care for it. I'm down to a 50 Renegade for TCs and it's a keeper.

Most T/C .50 with a 1/48 twist barrel shoot 80FF and either patched round ball or conical. I have two, .45 & .54 Hawken. I killed this with the .54 this year using 70FFF and patched round ball. h.h.

Thanks Weedhopper! Yes, in fact that is really the reason I want it is to hunt traditional like the old timers. I figured it would be much more fun and challenging and a better experience! It is fascinating as well how the gun works!

Re: TC 50 cal Hawken - 02/10/2016 09:11 AM

Evan, I went to using my scopeless single shot shotgun two years ago and my hunting has been much more enjoyable not having to lug around a bigger shotgun (especially hunting from my ladder stand)...

Re: TC 50 cal Hawken - 02/10/2016 06:11 PM

Agree with all.....cool stuff! Great thing is it's really easy to care for and will give you a lot of flexibility. You can take the trigger adjustment down too far for safety, so yeah around 3 or so us pretty nice. I like shooting the conical bullets in my 50.

Advanced coursework after obtaining will be learning how to utilize it without making noise......best done in person or safe practice. Well, it will make a lot of noise when fired, but setting triggers/hammer. Can you skin Griz?

Magnum, FYI, most of us on here were born in the 20th century.......but...we know what you mean. LOL wink

Here is a very good forum to join, read and ask questions about primitive firearms. h.h.

I agree. Make sure you only talk about primitive weapons.

The guys on here most likely can answer any of your questions. There are a lot of guys on here with many years experience shooting black powder weapons. h.h.

Re: TC 50 cal Hawken - 02/13/2016 06:26 AM

funny how those lines get drawn. so Flint ignition only is considered primitive, no #11 primers, and only blackpowder?

Just wondering is 777, Pyrodex, Blackhorn, using #11 caps etc considered primitive?

Re: TC 50 cal Hawken - 02/13/2016 07:48 AM

All those items you listed can be discussed. "Primitive" can be defined in numerous ways. It's how Claude (the owner) defines it on a certain day at a certain time.  Still lots of good info there if you can overlook the "Nazi-ish" attitudes.

Read the forum rules. Some of them will leave you scratching your head... laugh

Re: TC 50 cal Hawken - 02/13/2016 04:36 PM

OK got it.

I will only post in English, keep God out of it, only muzzleloaders, no inlines, percussion pistols are fair game, no talk of sabots unless they are in smooth bore guns, then plastic wads are cool, and don't call anyone a "Stich Nazi"

=)

Or you could just go to graybeard outdoors...... Knights and TCs are only viewed as late archaic pieces there and accepted by most.

Buddy of mine from Athens Alabama started the site. He's since turned it over to another fella. Great group of people and will go out of their way to help you. We used to get a group from there together and hog hunt in Tennessee.
