Canned hunting bill should be canned for good

Canned hunting bill should be canned for good - 03/31/2013 08:20 AM

What may happen on Monday at the Indiana General Assembly won’t be one of those corny gotcha April 1 jokes. You know, like the old “Hey, look, your shoestring’s untied.”

Guess it's time to quit. The amended SB487 passed the committee this morning by a 6-2 vote. This is not an April Fool. Everyone needs to contact his representative and senator in the Indiana legislature and get them to vote this bill down right away.

Called the Gov. Today.. i was aboit as nice about it as i could be ..in other words i was blunt!.. they said i could expect a return call very soon.......

Saunders and Arnold voted no. The rest ducked out of the vote or voted yes. Neither Arnold nor Saunders received money from the deer farmers:

Here is the newly amended bill:

http://www.in.gov/legislative/bills/2013/PDF/HCRF/CR048701.001.pdf

I've only read this once but the season is from August 15-Feb 15. Guess they want to sell those deer in velvet. Oh, and there's no bag limit. I guess you shoot until you run out money. Also appears you could gun or bow hunt anytime.

Remember that the original bill passed the Senate 48-0. Need every legislator contacted and asked to vote against this mess. Rep. Saunders mentioned being approached at a gas station and Wal-mart back home and asked to vote against this which he did. Contact your legislators today.

Re: Canned hunting bill should be canned for good - 04/01/2013 07:27 PM

Voting for was Eberhart, Ubelhor, Morris, Morrison, Heaton, and Kirchhofer.

Those testifying for the bill was Indiana Farm Bureau, North American Deer and Elk Farmers member and Vet from Illinois. A lobbiest and swine vet for the Purdue veternarin science. Mr. Bell a Deer Farmer how was featured on Channel 13 who wants in the the hunting but stopped after the ban. Of course the biggest advocates in the room were those legislators on the committee.

What is really clear through all of this is that many legislators have no fear of respect for sportsmen and the DNR. It is all about business

If this is a property rights issue i should be able to charge people to dump PCB transformers on my property. Who cares if i comtaminate thousands of citizens drinking water as long as i keep the transformers inside my fence. I am all for private property unless it infringes on the masses rights. CWD will infringe on all hunters and wildlife watchers. We must unite to kill this

Re: Canned hunting bill should be canned for good - 04/03/2013 07:45 AM

Red, yes and yes. This issue was amended into another bill and if/when the House passes it, it will go back to the Senate for approval. But, the Senate and the bill's sponsor in the Senate will have to approve the added language, which they may decide not to do.

Re: Canned hunting bill should be canned for good - 04/05/2013 03:44 PM

If Davisd Long gets it done watch next year, the deer industry will try to buy him off as they have others.

Since 1999 all the groups in Indiana have constantly on the defense, I think now is the time to go on offence. Time to protect our wild herd, and as there is no state or federal money available for clean up should CWD be found in a captive herd, write new rules that owners of domestic cervids need to carry insurance on their property to cover cleanup and depopulation expences.

Look at Wisconsin who has spent over 50 million dollars. They had to pay to depopulate the farm that had CWD, bought the farm at $400,000.00, double fence said farm AND try to contain CWD in the wild herd. Indiana does not have the money, the Feds have discontinued any funding for CWD.

IMO, if you want to "farm" deer, or shoot domestic deer you as an owner operator should cover any costs associated with your business. That includes cleaning up the mess CWD brings.

AMEN!!!!!!! I have to pay insurance in case MY livestock gets out, and causes an accident, or does crop damage to a neighbors farm, or any other kind of damage. THEY SHOULD TOO! BUT, that is still not a reason to let it happen.

I never count the deer farmers out until the session is over. Right now the amended bill is on the House schedule to be voted on Monday.

http://www.in.gov/legislative/reports/2013/BCALH.PDF

Senator Long controls much of what occurs in the Senate and I believe he can stop this amended bill from being heard or strip the amendment off and send it back to the House. Senator Steele can also decline to have the amendment attached to the bill and kill it that way.

But I'll believe it when it happens.

Re: Canned hunting bill should be canned for good - 04/06/2013 10:04 AM

If the bill is killed.....

1. That stops any new hunting preserves from opening, correct?

2. Does it also keep the 5 that exist from operating?

3. What effect (if any) does it have on the 400 deer farms that exist in the state?

Just looking for some clarification.
Posted By: delaney

Re: Canned hunting bill should be canned for good - 04/06/2013 10:40 AM

If the bill is killed:

1. The bill doesn't stop new deer hunting preserves from being opened but the DNR rule, which is under legal contest, does stop new ones from opening at this point until the lawsuit is resolved or decided, I believe.
2. The five will continue to be able to operate under the situation with the lawsuit.
3. The deer farms will continue to be allowed to operate under various existing rules and the direction of the Board of Animal Health.

Re: Canned hunting bill should be canned for good - 04/11/2013 08:51 PM

There's a floor calendar but they rarely follow it exactly. By the way Monday is the last day for bills on third reading. If it doesn't get out of the House by the close of business Monday it is done for the year.

http://www.in.gov/legislative/reports/2013/BCALH.PDF

I've been told the original portion of the bill having nothing to do with high fence deer hunting may be amended onto HB1563 which is the DNR omnibus bill. If true that would give Sen. Steele a way to get his bird preserve buddy what he wanted without having to support the high fence guys publicly.

Jack

P.S. The singing legislature was a hoot. Go to about 58:16 - 60.00 in session 2 of April 11 and enjoy.

That's great news....

So if the opposition "watches" this site this is an open question I would like for them to answer....

If your so called industry is such the "big rural economic boost" you claim it is, then why don't you put the numbers up then for all of us to see? Exactly how much have you improved your communities economies?.

My opinion is this (and strictly mine alone)... The only "economic boost" you are providing is your own back pocket otherwise, everyone would be doing it. All you are doing is feeding a bunch of lies and paying a bunch of naive legislators to believe you. Well we know the truth and we are not going back down and let you ruin our deer herd with your domesticated deer that we all know is not REAL HUNTING....

Long: Fenced deer hunting bill dead for the session

INDIANAPOLIS – The Senate leader said Wednesday that a bill to legalize five fenced deer-hunting preserves is essentially dead for the session.

Senate President Pro Tem David Long, R-Fort Wayne, said he wants to let the courts decide whether the preserves – which the state has been trying to close since 2005 – can remain open.

“Just go ahead, give us the decision and we’ll live with it,” Long said. cool
