Mushroom in a Jar - 05/11/2014 04:24 PM

I found 6 little grey mushrooms in my yard April 22, I find them there just about every year. Hornharvester said if you want to have some fun, put a gallon glass jar over the mushroom and watch it. I had never done this before so I tried it. It is close to my back porch, so I watched it every day. I dumped a gallon of rain water over it every 3rd day. I was impressed.

Day 1-mushroom was 1/2 inch tall

Day 13-It's growing

Day 16-I didn't think it would get any bigger

Day 19-I was impressed, the other 5 mushrooms got bigger, but not as big as this one.

Day 20-May 11 The taste test on a bread and butter sandwich. Awesome! It was fun to watch it grow.

Amazing how much they grow. Ive seen them fill up the gallon jug.

Many people think mushrooms wont grow after they pop out of the ground but they do. Ive left small roons many times for a week or more and they do just what yours did, grow bigger.

Thanks for the pictures. h.h.

Great photos! I feel sorry for the people who don't live in a place where they can let one grow. I am blessed to have places very close to the house where they grow every year and I look at them them everyday while feeding the dogs and pick them only when they are starting to turn dry. It is a lot of fun to watch them grow!

We found a few very nice yellows Saturday in Jefferson County that appeared to be fresh. But, I agree with Weed.

Saturday I found 3 big greys and 3 yellows. Today I hunted areas I didnt Saturday and found 0 but didnt hunt long due to other business. Indicators here are at their peek. My woods use to produce a lot of roons but hasnt for the last 4-5 years. All the dead elm are too far gone to produce. I thought the ash would but Ive found 0 under them. When I do find them they are singles. h.h.

Any of you guys go to Michigan mushroom hunting? We used to go up for a week every year, the hunting is amazing. We would bring home a truck load. We ate all we wanted and sold the rest. We hunted around Gaylord and we would go up on Memorial Day. That was 40 years ago, I've heard that it is hard to find a place to hunt up there now.

I use to go up around Messick but havent for years. First time I ever saw anyone selling mushrooms was in Messick Michigan, a guy sitting in an old Jeep downtown had mushrooms in quart strawberry boxes for $5.00 each. I commented to my friend, who in the heck would pay $5.00 for a quart of mushrooms......LOL three years ago I was selling them for $30.00 a pound to a local farm store........h.h.

When we went up it was my Dad, my brother and me. We camped in a campground. I remember there was a local bar in Gaylord we went to, we would take a big sack of mushroom in and they would fry them for ever one to eat. Needless to say we drank a lot of free beer. Those are some of my good memories!
