Online GIS and Plat Maps - 09/23/2016 09:46 AM

I wanted to put together a thread with all the known online GIS/Plat maps available in the state of Indiana. Once you learn how to use them, they are great for finding places to hunt. The property lines are not always 100% accurate, but will get you close and allow you to find out who owns what property (most of the time).

http://maps.indiana.edu/
This map shows nearly the entire state of Indiana, but I have found the lines can be off sometimes. It will not give you property owner names, but will give you the Parcel ID which can be used to find the owner sometimes via the county's PVA.

http://www.wthengineering.com/index.php/customer-websites/list-of-customer-web-sites
This website is very helpful. For the counties listed, you can see the lines, owners and their home address.

https://beacon.schneidercorp.com/
This website also has its own set of counties that will have the lines and owners.

If you know of any other maps, post them below and I will add them to this post.

Re: Online GIS and Plat Maps - 09/23/2016 10:36 AM

A lot of the county assessor websites have links to the GIS site. Most of them use Beacon, which you already listed, but I know some, like Lake County, use mygisonline; https://lakein.mygisonline.com/

As you can see, it's the county name and state abbreviation then (dot) mygisonline.com. Porter County is https://porterin.mygisonline.com/

It works a lot better if your computer or device can view it using Silverlight mode. I don't know how many counties use it, but I guess you could just type it in in that format to check. If you put in a county that doesn't use it, it just takes you to sidwellmaps.com.

Ive used Beacon GIS manytimes...it is a good place to do research, see property lines and who owns what ...

Re: Online GIS and Plat Maps - 09/23/2016 01:26 PM

You would think that with all this information available people would "know" who owns the land they are walking around on.

Just remember the lines shown on those sites are not always accurate and may not match the legal description on record at the court house.

I used Google Earth a few years ago and could actually see deer trails worn from years of use. This is also a great post.

The only thing I can find right now in the Library. They have a copy of the paper plat book.

Re: Online GIS and Plat Maps - 10/15/2016 09:58 AM

This map has Parke County's lines:
http://maps.indiana.edu

You can get Parcel ID numbers off that map and then search for the owner by that Parcel ID on this site:
https://beacon.schneidercorp.com/Application.aspx?AppID=620&LayerID=11000&PageTypeID=2&PageID=4537

parke does not have a GIS system. I stopped in and asked a year ago. They claim its too much money. A $20 plat book is all they have and it is limited to what you can make out on a drawn map with no satellite imagery to refer to.

Its a ridiculous system.

There IS a system, it's just not as high-tech as the other counties' systems.

See my post a couple posts above with how to see the lines ^^^

There are several counties online now that weren't just last year. I occasionally have to look for that data in relation to my work and I've found it much easier lately to find them just by Googling, for a random example, Fountain County Indiana GIS...click the result Announcements for Fountain County, IN - Beacon - The Schneider...then click on View Map and you're in. That one is Beacon and counties are using three or four different companies, but it is getting easier to find and access.

Parke County on Beacon doesn't give you easy access to map view, but this site is a little better: https://parkein.wthgis.com/

If you want to view the imagery while zoomed out, go to layers and click on the box by imagery, like you're turning it off and back on, then the imagery will stay even when your zoomed out.

I like to use the HUNT STAND app. For $9.99 a year you can get unlimited requests for land parcels. It lists the exact acreage and the name of the landowner. I have found it to be very accurate with all the properties that I own.
