Hunting near Indianapolis? - 09/19/2016 09:05 PM

Hi, I recently moved to Fishers in Hamilton county and I'm a junior at Fishers High School. Does anyone know of any deer oppurtunites around the area, bow or firearm?

Junior in high school equates to how old? 15-16?

check out this for public land

You can do all right on IN public land. You are going to have to drive 2+ hours from Indy to find good hunting on public land though.

That's what I figured, I'll just have to ask around farmers and others with land around here. We have a farm in eastern Indiana I just wasn't sure what's all around here.

I know a great place that is untouched and you will have the opportunity for 2 huge bucks at least and likely 4-5 does with a bow only. (you'll know why if you visit this place).

You will be the only one hunting there and it is public land. It is a weird spot that literally no one knows about.

I used to hunt there every single day before work (right next to the building I worked in).

Confirm that it is still public land.

Where it says: Laurel Hall - I used to work in that building when it was Hudson Institute. I could park at work and walk right down the hill and start hunting. It is a gated community so you can't park there.

You can park in Cathedral parking lot and walk down the hill next to the small overpass and boom you're in there.

Oh ok I really like that. Did you ever have any success hunting there? Also it's listed as property owned by the Cathedral Trust Fund I think it was? But it's listed as tax exempt, was that how it was when you hunted it?

If it's owned by the Cathedral Trust Fund, it's probably owned by Cathedral High School (right next to the property), so it's probably not public anymore.

That's what I'm thinking, maybe it would be worth asking the school to hunt there then?

Are you positive that strip that I outlined is owned by the school? A part of it was but a narrow strip was listed as public hunting land - a very narrow strip which is where they all walk to get from place to place (nice funnel).

Yes I had success there. I also saw one of the biggest bucks of my life, but it was too dark to shoot. He silhouetted while walking next to the river. I was sick for a week.

Yes, I did a GIS mapping of that area and it's under Catherdral's name. I guess I could contact the school and ask for permission to hunt, I'm just not sure what they would say.

I'm pretty sure they are going to tell you no simply to the fact that you are wanting to bring a weapon onto school property... They are not going to want any part of that...

You can thank Lawyers and "I wanna get rich quick" sue happy society for that...

Best of luck to you though...

That sucks. Great place for 1 or 2 people to just chill and enjoy the hunt.

Does anyone know anything about the Wilbur Wright wildlife area? Considering taking a buddy there next week sometime to try and get him his first deer.

+1 Chevy is spot on. Hunted there maybe 10 years ago, and gave it up. "Doe only" property also I believe.
