Live From The Stand - 09/26/2015 10:15 AM

Not much happening now. Busted a deer in bed in an old pasture on the way in. Saw first scrape of the year. May have heard turkeys flying down. Squirrels are napping. Just checked hunt predictor and it says 1100 is a prime feeding time. Speaking of which, our lunch sandwich is at Cedar branch farms where Joe so kindly put us up. I'd like to stay on stand all day but that might be torture for a 13 yo.
We set up the stand near water and for a West wind. Rained last night and winds been out of NE. Jacobs learning the nature of hunting.

Awesome video. Which way was the wind blowing for you to have them right under the stand. Did you use any high tech scent elimination product ( Ozonics . )

Wind was blowing for left to right in the video. My scent control is not high-tech, just a system I have used and been successful.

-Shower in the morning with non-scent soap.
-Keep EVERYTHING I take into the woods in plastic tubs until I am walking to my stand.
-Spray down inside of arms, legs and feet after getting dressed, before walking to stand.
-Spray down while in the stand every hour or so, especially hat and facemask, if you're wearing one.
-I do use an ozone generator at the end of the day to de-odorize boots, pants and jackets if I sweated a lot.
-Wash everything I would wear that weekend in scent free soap including jeans/pants/underwear/socks I would drive to our property while wearing.

All of this is great precaution, but having the right wind for your stand's setup is KING, as you cannot eliminate all scent. Don't hunt a stand if it's not the right wind.

Re: Live From The Stand - 10/07/2015 08:47 PM

Ozonics, HAHA! I love watching Whitetails Inc but every time I see that box in the tree, I laugh. I pretty much use the same system as arlowe13 and hunt out of 15-18ft stands. There is no reason to go 25-30ft up. Wind is key and pressure. I am a firm believer in not pressuring your spots / rotating.
Posted By: kicker

Re: Live From The Stand - 10/07/2015 10:13 PM

I have the same set up but most of my stands are set at whatever the cover is around the stand. I use huge zip lock bags and saturate my cloths with wild life research autumn blend. I am a firm believer in baking soda and distilled water, as well as wild life research products.

Re: Live From The Stand - 10/08/2015 07:00 AM

Ozone works to deodorize items like clothes, basements, cars, etc. I have a real ozone machine putting out 7000 mg/hour and it works to deordorize about anything. You DO NOT want to be sucking this toxic gas into your lungs though. It is for ozone bombing in uninhabited areas.

now the Ozonics unit, that is a joke....I cringe when I see one in a blind with a kid sucking that toxic gas into their lungs...

Re: Live From The Stand - 10/08/2015 01:28 PM

I've shot probably 50+ deer in my lifetime. In the early years I did all the washing and spraying down of clothes and finally it just got to be to much hassle and money. About 10 years ago I quit all that together and still shot as many deer as I did in the early years(including a 140" 10 pt a couple years ago while I was smoking!) I'm not saying it probably doesn't help some but it's just not worth the trouble to me. I'm a HUGE believer in being at the right spot at the right time and having a good deer population in your hunting area. You could be invisible and smell like an acorn but if there's only 2 deer per square mile where you hunt you're probably not gonna see any. I still see lots of deer I could shoot and don't too, just don't buy into all that anymore. I'm not saying people shouldn't hunt however they want, just not my thing.
Posted By: Jeff Valovich

Re: Live From The Stand - 10/08/2015 01:43 PM

I ALWAYS use the soaps, shampoo's, sprays, scentless bags, dress away from the truck, hang clothes outside when possible, etc and after killing over 120 deer to this point, some of those some big un's too, I feel I am doing something right.... I still play the wind, every little bit you can do to control scent dispersion helps...deer dont read books, so you never know where they may come from, and I feel by doing what I do, will reduce my scent stream......notice I said reduce, not eliminate...

Re: Live From The Stand - 10/08/2015 02:09 PM

What toxic gas? It generates negative ions...which is just air with a negative electric charge that falls to the ground with dust/odor particles attached.

We use them on each machine at iaf to clean smoke from the air that we breathe

What am I missing?

Re: Live From The Stand - 10/08/2015 03:45 PM

I don't think it hurts, nor costs too much to use a scent free/deodorizer soap on your clothes and yourself, but I agree with the assessment that it mostly depends on where you're hunting. My Dad and uncle see plenty of deer when they are working the farm smelling like sweat, diesel, their lunch, regular scented body soaps, deodorant, clothes detergents, etc. etc., so there's really no reason for us to think those deer aren't acclimated to those daily human scents.

tons of movement this morning, the cold snap had them up on their feet later. They were hammering the white oaks. I was 25 feet up a white oak....

Low pressure system, north wind, drop in temps....usually triggers more deer movement.

Saw a 160 plus this morning at 70 yards, grunted at him and he hauled the mail back where he came from. First time ever I had a negative reaction from a grunt tube! Least I now have a buck worth hunting sighted. Two weeks of sheer pleasure starting on this coming Friday, hunting with family and friends. Did I mention some of the best meals of the year? No spam or Ditte Moore stew in my deer camp.....

Set the video quality on 1080p and full screen for best effect.

Re: Live From The Stand - 11/01/2015 09:26 AM

Spent all day THURSDAY, Friday, and Saturday hunting on my farm here in Ripley Cty. Mornings were a total bust, with no deer sightings and or movement. Evening have been somewhat productive but no bucks. Does are moving from bedding to feeding areas, around 6:30 to 6:45 pm. Last night at 7:00 had a cool looking spike chasing 2 does and also saw a doe with her fawn tagging along.
Posted By: sticksender

Re: Live From The Stand - 11/01/2015 10:58 AM

Lots of deer moving pre-dawn on the walk-in today. Then pretty much dead after daylight.
Plenty of rut-clueless 1.5 yr-old bucks are still roaming around nudging does. About typical for this time of year.
But seeing very little genuine rut action yet.

I ended up seeing 5 total, all doe. Two came out right about 5:30 and the other 3 about 15 mins later. One was a piebald doe that is 3 years old this year.

Got another piebald fawn and she is major white. Haven't got any pictures of her yet unless shes on a game cam I haven't checked for 2 weeks.

My neighbor told me last year he saw a 6 pt. piebald buck behind our properties but I've never seen him. Ive definitely got the piebald gene on my property. Ive seen 3 piebalds and there might be 4 in the last 9 years. h.h.

Had 4 does calmly walk by me yesterday morning. No bucks were following. Found a few scrapes. Brother saw 9 does and 2 bucks, they didn't seem to be seeking or chasing.

Skunked last night unless you count the 3 does walking through the campground after dark smile

Had a big old doe walk by me this morning. No bucks followed. Bro also had a doe walk by with no bucks following.

I wish I could hire a hot doe to walk around me this time of year. Would that be prostitution?
