Dream buck for sure. I heard he scores about 195 net green. Short of the 204" WR for archery, but what a monster!

Re: Iowa Giant.... - 11/23/2016 12:46 PM

Well, this may be a nothing deer, IF the reports are true.... seems like this guy used a crossbow, and crossbows are not legal in Iowa unless you have a special permit.....which the kid had the PREVIOUS year for a shoulder injury, but he didnt didnt renew it for 2016.... Supposedly, the Iowa DNR now has possesion of the head/rack .... I'm trying to find more info on this...this was from another site...... IF true .... I say again IF true....

(from another site)

"There is an unfortunate situation unfolding around this buck. The antlers were confiscated this past weekend by the Iowa DNR. The kid who shot it is 19 years old. The buck was shot with a crossbow, which is illegal in Iowa unless a doctor can provide documentation of an upper extremity problem that renders a person unable to shoot a compound bow. Last year, Austin Pontier was issued a crossbow permit due to a shoulder injury sustained while wrestling in high school. The latest information I am hearing is that he did not get his crossbow permit renewed for this season, therefore making his crossbow an illegal weapon. I hope this does not end up being the case, as the buck gross scores 214" typical and has a legitimate shot at Mel Johnson's 204 7/8" net archery typical record. The Iowa DNR has a reputation for being overly aggressive in situations like this...IE the Joe Franz Buck. It has also been reported the Field & Stream had previously offered Pontier $75,000 to keep the story about the buck off of social media and give them an exclusive cover story on it. Bass Pro also reportedly offered the kid $300,000.00 for the antlers. Both offers were made before the DNR took the rack this past weekend."

Re: Iowa Giant.... - 11/23/2016 04:00 PM

Interesting development, still an amazing buck. FWIW there should be one correction to the quote about eclipsing Mel Johnson's P&Y world record though, as the buck would not be eligible even if legally taken. B&C yes but not P&Y. Regardless of records books it is still an incredible monster.

Re: Iowa Giant.... - 11/23/2016 04:49 PM

Yes...he may have never realized he needed to get his crossbow permit renewed for this season.

Re: Iowa Giant.... - 11/23/2016 05:16 PM

I dont think the Iowa DNR has a regulation/or law
that allows for "messin up" or no "illegal intentions"....now maybe if his last name was Clinton ..... just sayin' ....

So your saying you wouldn't inter it in any books? confused
Posted By: Jeff Valovich

Re: Iowa Giant.... - 11/23/2016 07:18 PM

Ive never put any in the "books" yet and I have 7 that would qualify for P&Y .... however, after seeing what these guys go thru with the media, names tarnished, scruitiny, etc.... I would just contact P&Y/B&C and that would be it.... there would not be any facebook, twitter, "Hey, look what I done" stuff ..... and I wouldnt sell the antlers either (I dont think), but I would allow replica's to be made... for a Price ;0) ...

Re: Iowa Giant.... - 01/14/2017 09:34 AM

Posted recently on bowsite: "the buck has officially been scored at a net 194 1/8".

A long way from being a new record, but still a true monster.

Wasn't this supposedly an illegal kill?... What's the story on this buck?
Posted By: sticksender

Re: Iowa Giant.... - 01/18/2017 07:57 PM

Word is that it's all legit! Was posted on Bowsite that he'll have it at the Iowa Deer Classic.

Re: Iowa Giant.... - 01/18/2017 08:40 PM

I would take the $75k from field and stream for the story, then sell the rack to Bass pro for $300K and have them make me a reproduction antler set and shoulder mount.

I doubt he still gets that offer if it's not WR... But you never know!

Re: Iowa Giant.... - 01/19/2017 09:05 AM

I thought he was having issues with the fact he shot it with a crossbow even though he wasn't still allowed to use one.

Perhaps he was able to get it straightened out...

If he did get it squared away it will be interesting to see if the offers from Bass Pro and Field and Stream are still on the table and if he takes them.

It would be tough to turn down $375,000.....

Re: Iowa Giant.... - 01/26/2017 04:03 PM

Nobody is surprised that a buck like this came out of Iowa. But these big bucks can pop up anywhere. I just scored an Indiana buck last week that NETS 180 4/8". What is impressive about him is that this is a 9 pointer with a 7 4/8" abnormal point! His 9 point typical frame grosses 200 0/8" and it would net 188! This actually is as an 8 pointer because the G-4 point without a match is deducted.

Now comes the real Crazy part. The hunter and her hunting companions found both sides of his sheds from last year this spring. It was a clean 10 point last year and was even bigger!! If I give it the same inside spread as this year (Main beams are longer and all points are longer so it was probably wider) It would have grossed 211 3/8" and netted 204 4/8" That ties it with Mel Johnson's buck for #4 all time typical whitetails.
Yep, here in Indiana!!

Re: Iowa Giant.... - 01/26/2017 07:30 PM

But things I read we top Iowa for a few years. Does anyone follow Midwest whitetail? Bill Winke didn't kill a buck for a couple years then killed just an ok buck last season. He seems to actually wound more deer then I would admit to. Then this year he takes three mature bucks. Why can landowners kill 3 bucks in Iowa but yet we have a one buck rule here. Idk I'm just sayin, I am actually for obr just to say

I do have pictures but I do not put pictures and names on social media of deer I score. I leave that up to the hunter. there are a few pictures around of her and the buck.
