pav IMO, the problem is... we have alot more people hunting deer than deer hunters. We have always had (and always will have) our share of "slob" hunters. Nothing new there...... But, that doesn't mean that just because a person hunts with a certain piece of equipment or only hunts certain days of the year that he/she isn't a serious hunter.

What weapon one choses to use is NOBODY'S business but the hunter using it...
Hunters should be hunting for the sport and for conservation efforts... Not for record books, period!!! [/b]you're right I will never unite with xbow hunters. you're right again. I will just go hunting. but I wont forget and I wont back down on this bs. what weapon somebody chooses to hunt is my business and will always be. dnr doesn't make my rules. xbow hunters hear from me regularly and if they or you don't like it I don't give a ****. friend of mine from college just bought an xbow..he's never had anybody teach him about hunting..much like most of you from what I've learned. I enlightened him on xbows and he returned the bow. his exact response was, "wow, you're right. I love to bow hunt but I may as well be using a gun. this is too easy man" yep you're right. we should be hunting for the sport and conservation. spot on. what is the sport in xbow hunting? ha. how does it conserve our deer herd? I think our liberal gun season and doe permits takes "care of our herd" just fine. next

crossbows have been legal for deer hunting 30+ years in Ohio. Is there herd 'wiped out'? Originally posted by Parke: .....you buy into whatever is said and help wipe out our herd thus saving the ins. comps $..which is what it is all about.

These discussions tend to get a bit heated...take a look at some real ballistics data though and you see the two weapons are in fact very similar
Outdoor life reported...
"...It turns out that, from a ballistics perspective, crossbows aren’t that different from modern compound bows. Consider a middle-of-the-road crossbow (175-pound draw, 420-grain bolt pushing a 125-grain field tip) and a moderate compound (75-pound draw, 350-grain shaft tipped with a 125-grain field point).
Based on the bows described, the crossbow generates significantly more energy at the bow, about 115 foot-pounds compared to about 82 foot-pounds for the compound. Shaft velocity is comparable, at about 350 feet per second measured at the bow.
At 10 yards, both shafts will drop about 1 inch. At 20 yards, both drop about 6 inches. And at 30 yards, the distance at which most deer are shot by bowhunters, the compound shaft drops about 17 inches from its zero; the crossbow bolt drops about 15 inches. At 40 yards, the compound drops about 30 inches, the crossbow about 26 inches."

.... [/b]No. There herd and quality puts ours to shame fora different reason which I also described. Gun season is short and comes in in December! Dude think before u speak.

I'm trying to figure out what compound shoots a 475 grain arrow 350fps. Did Outdoor Life name the bow or just pull it out or the air?

The article is full of BS for the purpose of selling crossbows. The average shot at whitetails according to P&Y(OH! those nasty record keepers) is 17 yards!
Good points Varmit 101........... what was it about the average compound being 75 pounds??????????
Who here shoots a VERTICAL bow at 75 pounds
they made the numbers work!
When science meets tradition there will be sparks.....

This stuff is so unimportant in the scope of the future of Indiana's wildlife, including deer. So many bigger issues. Everything is twisted, massaged and yes, even lied about from manufacturers, publications and many others.

As far as I'm concerned, this issue was decided 3 years ago. If others want to continue to complain about it, that's certainly up to them. As new and/or more pressing issues come up down the road, I'll concentrate my energy there. Have a good day.

Parke, you sound like a sniveling child that didn't get his way. Fact is, a dead deer is a dead deer regardlesss of what killed it. Everyone gets one buck and all the does you can eat or give away.
Sounds like you need to refine your tactics if you cant get er done with all those days you spend hunting.
Grow the **** up. Get over it.
Be a real hunter now and drop those training wheels off your bow. Then maybe we'll. Let you brag or hitch or whatever. Lol

I haven't dropped it. Far from it. Yup I added another tool to the list of weapons I have used to kill a deer. So?
Didnt affect your hunt now did it?
Ive done it with handgun, rifle, muzzleloader, compound, recurve, longbow and crossbow. And never once felt inclined to force others to use what I use. Or degrade them for what they use.
Lol

I don't think this a major issue because weapons don't decide the overall deer harvest. If you're really concerned about the deer herd, you have to address season length and or bad limits. Heck, maybe we should only have a two week deer season, any weapon. The problem comes when you start carving up seasons for certain weapons because it becomes a "mine" idealism which never ends, is never enough and never satisfies everyone.
