The Indiana DNR is taking comments on a proposed otter season. Everyone should go to this web site, http://www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/7373.htm , log in and leave input if your interested in otter trapping.

I commented on the otter season and also the idea of allowing land owners the right to allow written permission to allow people to come in and shoot coons, foxes, and a few other animals anytime of the year.

69 coons
19 possuums
6 coyotes
21 muskrats
3 skunks
1 mouse
1squirrel

Funny this popped up...I was down at Jasper Pulaski today 'yote hunting and found places again where otter have been working on one of their ditches...tracks and skid marks all over, neat to see....also saw two Bald Eagles down there, 1 adult and 1 immature...the young one circle over head at 40 yds when I was calling....the adult came in to while calling, made one pass and left....all I could think of was WOW !!

Those dang otters aren't so cute. Couple years ago they got into my pond and pretty well wiped out the fish. Most folks in this area with ponds anywhere near a river of large stream have had similar problems. They will come in as a group, clean your pond out, then move on. Your once good fishing is no more.

Definitely need to open season on them. They have a very nice valuable pelt that many would be glad to trap.

We have very few otters up here. DNR released some 20 years ago in the Salamonie River and they left or were killed by accident. Rivers up here are to polluted with industrial run off. Rivers use to flush out all those pollutants with springs floods but since the feds built the dams to hold back spring floods the rivers have become silted in. Nothing but muck and mud now and full of junk fish. h.h.

I left my responce on the otter season. They have taken over one of my fishing holes and I would like to be the one to get rid of them.

I wouldn't want to trap them for $$. I would just like to have one or two, just to say I caught them. I would probably get one mounted.

Open season would not be an option, nor should it be. It will likely be a quota system.

I am amazed at them as animals. I enjoy seeing them in the wild and have been happy so watch their expansion back into Indiana streams and rivers.

Steiny. There's been an otter den, if its called that, downstream from the Adamsboro bridge about half way to the next bridge. My wife and I have watched them numerous times while duck hunting. They pretty much destroyed the smallmouth fishing in that area. Between the otters and the beavers, duck hunting was/is usually an eventful time.

I built and stocked a small pond in 2001. Just as the fishing was getting good the hundreds of dollars worth of stocked hybrid gills and channel cats ended up being nothing but otter food. So you might say I'm not too fond of otters.

With all the complaints about otters ruining fishing ponds and how bobcats kill so many rabbits, fawms and other small wildlife critters why in the heck does our DNR feel the need to bring these species back in our areas. I also think the release of those darn lady bugs was an einstien idea when they swarm by the billions into my house during October every year.

I remember back when they first stocked otters in the state I told a hunting buddy in Wisconsin about it. His response was "why in the He.. would anybody in their right mind want them around, I wish they were extinct here".
