I was thinking I will try and do like a daily update on the Tenn. Turkey hunt. It will all be off my phone so I will see how it goes.

Day 1 got off work and headed down. Got here about 230, got ready visited land owner and in the blind by 5. Rain set in at 6, we didn't see any but in the rain at about quitting time one gobbled at a loud truck going down the road. At quitting time got out in the rain owl hooted, bingo so hopefully he hangs on to that limb for the last time tonight, sleep good ol buddy we have a date in the morning. ( I hope).

Day 2
It is 140 and still in the blind waiting, on what 2 things the rain that has been bouncing off the blind all day to STOP, and for any toms that want to end the pain of being wet all day. We got in the blind at a little before 6 am. Had about 5 gobbling but 2 or 3 somewhat close to us. They shut up about 630 and then nothing found ourselves playing yatzee to pass time

Also that is my dads weapon of choice here is mine. [Linked Image]

Then around 1030 in the rain I look up in the woods and see a bird headed to the field. He was not gobbling or strutting but got in the field and started to us. He finally stopped strutted a second then gobbled. We thought its on now. He came down to about 40 yds. Then walked around never coming on in to the decoys. Circled us and went back up the field probably could have killed him with a gun, but there is always next time.

Day 3 started out foggy but the birds were still gobbling around us, we had a hen calling on the edge of the field but couldn't see her.
[Linked Image]
Shortly after we heard her fly down I seen a bird through the fog. She was answering us and a bird gobbled on the edge of the woods but we couldn't see it. The hen took off that way. Then we saw a bird in strut through the fog. It ended up being 2 hens and 2 jakes. Nothing really happened they just wondered off into the woods. Then about 1000 I looked out and saw 6 hens and a long beard coming in to the field. They came across but no closer than 50 yds. my dad was thinking about shooting him but we let him go.
[Linked Image]
Then about hour and a half later my dad was calling and now would be a good time to say that there was some logging activity going on down the ridge aways making noise. When he was calling we heard this sssccccrrrggggggh. Ah no big deal must have been the loggers. Then I heard it again and look out the window oh my. Big Tom strutting headed right to pretty boy. I get the bow up arrow on draw get a hole and let it fly, and got some really nice breast feathers he jumps and runs across the field and up in to the woods. ARE YOU KIDDING ME. So strike one for me I guess. Hunted till about 430 and didn't have anything else.

Day 4
Dad went to the blind again and I took the gun and wents on up the hill to try something different. I got up top a little late and it was cold down here temps in the 30s. The birds didn't gobble at all. I thought I don't want to keep moving to the roost if I don't know where the birds are so I stopped and sit down to.wait on them to fly down. I sit down about 5 min later I look up and see a hen coming towards me then another. I thought I better get my gun up just incase a Tom is with them and sure enough sssppppiiiittttdrrrrrrruuuummmm oh man there he is ok start picking out a spot. I see the hens go through this hole and now all I got to do is wait for him to get there, then I will call he will come out of strut and I will shoot for a quick hunt. He gets there I call and he stops behind a tree, are you kidding me. Off he goes ok next hole he blows by that one, then I get to watch him just strut right out of my life. Never gobbled at me or anything, I went on up and sit till about 1230 then walked and called my way to the blind. And sit in there till 4 we did have one gobbling about 230 but nothing happened from it.

Day 5 Brrrrrr man it is cold 30 degrees in the morning is not turkey hunting weather. Any way we got up and went at it. I had a fool proof plan since turkeys are a routine animal the birds that I seen yesterday would surely come back through the same area as yesterday. So I head up top the hill and get in position and 2 days in a row now they didn't gobble. I sit and wait and guess what they didn't come. I didn't hear any gobbles today I went on up the hill and sit till 1215 and I did manage to play with a hen for a while as she came to with in 5 yards looking for her friend that was calling to her. We decided to leave around 1 take a break and go back this evening to try that. And that didn't work. The highlight of today was this little find. It was at a fence crossing.

Day 6 man we can't buy a break. It started out 30 degrees with a sprinkle so we both went to the blind. By the time the sun was up it was a cold rain all morning long. With that said about 8 we look out the side window to see 2 jakes just feeding away from us so we watch them. Then from the fence row right next to us we hear a loud cluck. And we have heard toms come up behind us putt at the decoy and come running in. We heard this and thought oh yes, well it was just a hen clucking. She fed across the field to the 2 jakes, and we are watching them and you could tell the attitude of the jakes changed for a reason. I look out the back and 2 strutters behind us, 2 more jakes with 3 hens. They meet up Chase each other then wonder up in the woods in the rain. We sit in the blind till 130 before the cold wetness took its toll. Dad tried to tell me it was the turkey farm I put out. I just thought I would try something different for the birds to look at. How sad is this 7 hours south in Tenn. On a spring turkey hunt and the weather finally took its toll. Staying warm and napping [Linked Image]

Well sorry for the delay guys but, day was not much of a change I think that man name Murphy was out there finally a nice day on our last day and we thought we had a pretty good plan. We got there early to move the blind over by a fence row that the birds the day before Hung around and birds in the previous days had to. So we get to the blind in the dark and, DOGS are in the woods barking at us and running around in the woods. Well we continue with the plan cause iam sure that's not the first dogs thats have ever been in the woods( just trying to stay positive) well we are carrying the stuff across the field and the barks get louder and out of the pre dawn darkness 2 black masses appear in the field coming at us. They get to about 30 yards and hold there ground and bark, well after a bit of this I sit my stuff down and grab dads gun(incase they are not as scared of me as they should be) and head at them to scare them off. Well it took twice but they finally head in the woods. We get sit up and the dogs bark just enough to let us know they are there Grrrrr. But in the middle of all this I hear a hen yelp right behind us, ok all the commotion did totally scare all the birds, but now we are thinking she probably won't come down for a while. Well about 8 a gobble, by god there are turkeys still in the woods. He gobbled about 4 times and he was behind us but within a hundred yards so he will be in the field when he gets down. We thought we heard birds fly down and would you know it the dogs started barking again but only this time they were going the other way. Gee I wonder what they were doing.

So we headed back to Indiana last night after 7 days of hunting in the cold wet rain. We did see some and I took a shot with my bow but it was a slow year and the first year for the last few we didn't bring atleast one home. We had a good time and are thankful that we have a generous land owner that let's us come hunt. Thanks for the guys that was reading this and I hope it was something fun to do before we get to our season here, sorry I could get you guys a picture of a thunder chicken but it for sure was not cause a lack of trying.
