I saw just what you need at Browns Kubota in Moorefield this week a 20hp or so 4wd with a mowing deck and a front end loader

Get something that has a 3 pt. hitch at least. Lot of small older Fords will do the job and can be had for $2000 plus.

I have a 23 year old kabota. Best tractor I ever had!.. only problem is on the very rare occasion something breaks parts are pricy! I also have a ford 2810 diesal..works great but a little light in the front end.. I agree that any of the old fords and such work great and you can get them fairly cheap!

My opinion, so take it for what its worth. I think a combo lawn mower / farm tractor rig is going to result in something that isn't great at either.

Your lawn mower is your most used piece of equipment in most country living circumstances, so get a good mower designed for mowing. One of the zero turn type mowers will cut your mowing time down by a bunch.

Any tractor small enough to mow with isn't going to be much of a tractor, plus you should have ag tires on a tractor to do any kind of serious work, and they will eat up your lawn. About the smallest I would want for farm type work; bush hog mowing, small food plots, loader work, etc. would be in the 35hp range, and I would definitely go with 4wd.

If my budget was tight, I would put the most money in my lawn mower, then look for an older inexpensive farm tractor.

I would have to agree with that. If you can swing the cost of a small 4wd kubota, then they are great. The small ones are in high demand. Used ztrs are pretty easy to come by, just make sure the hours are 500 or less. They usually require some work every 1000h. Like others said, an old ford with a front end loader will be your best bet, then you can save up for something 4wd. I have a JD 2440 diesel from the early 80's. It gets most everything done, but 4wd sure would be nice. I'm able to mow 6 1/2 acres in 3 1/2 h with a ztr. Mine is a hustler and they are worth every penny, but I think the motor is more important on those than the brand of ztr. Scag, grasshopper, exmark are all good. Just my 2 cents.
