Best off-season attractant? - 03/04/2015 02:24 PM

What's up guys! I'm curious as to what in your experience has been the best offseason attractant for whitetails. I currently have a Trophy Rock and a bag of "Gold Deer Nuggets" by Record Rack and BioLogic but due to the snow haven't had a chance to try it. I've been trying the last few years to find something that works well and what I used last year worked great... for coons but didn't have a deer touch it.. I have pics up upwards of 8+ coons on the pile at once.. so I wont be trying that one again this year. Just want to see what options I had and what you guys have luck with! Thanks!

As someone who spends a bunch of $$ every year feeding coons, to keep them in an area I can safely run my hounds on them, I'd like to know what you found they craved? Deer around here this time of year are very spuratic-where they were everywhere in December they seem to just occasionally pass through now. I've never been able to hold them though I've grown corn, beans, turnips and winter greens (Wildlife institute mix).

I have tried many types of mineral attractants and can tell without any doubt that Lucky Buck has worked the best for me. Now, once the site is established, I agree with Chevy. YOu can throw any type of salt on the spot to keep it fresh and they will hit it. The trick is to get it started...and Lucky Buck smells like apples. They will find it quickly.
Good Luck.

I use the Bigtine 30/06 and the deer love it. So do the coons because it has molasses in it. But I know when I have that out I get a ton of deer pictures and when its gone and I just have salt the pics go way down. I don't have a high deer density either, I'm in Henry County.

I use this mixture:

1 part Dicalcium Phosphate
2 parts Big 6 mineral (Red stuff)
1 part stock salt

I did look around and compare analysis of some of the "deer" mineral supplements, and cattle mineral. We actually free choice this brand of mineral to our cattle. It is close to Lucky Buck in the trace mineral dept. I'll use this in my deer licks also. But have to have the salt and/or Lucky buck to get them started on it. We use the Framework ADE. So it has also needed vitamins along with the trace mineral.
